OK everyone, I've been playing with this planner for at least a week now and am ready for some input. But, don't laugh too hard......I don't know how to do a darn thing on this computer....so please help!!
How do you all post pictures of your kitchens and the kitchen planner pictures? Do I have to scan it first, etc. Is there somewhere in the forum here that tells me how to post them? (please speak english, I don't speak computer-eez)
The easiest way I have found is to get the view you want in the 3D window, then press the "PRINT SCREEN" key on your keyboard. That copies it to the clipboard. But then you need some sort of image program to past into - I use Paint Shop Pro. The purpose of pasting the image into the program is so you can save as a JPG file to save space. You can also click Save As in the planner software and choose BMP file instead of the planner format - but the BMP will be a huge file! Good luck!
If all else fails, you can always give your information (user name and password) to all of us so we can log onto Ikea and view it....or you can ask somebody to post the pictures for you.
Were unable to use the Print Screen button on keyboard and couldn't copy the file as a bitmap. So, we printed, scanned, and posted the IKEA pictures on PhotoBucket. This is the floor plan I came up with:
From left to right on window wall: (window 62" wide & 14'11" from the left end wall inside laundry, not from the bi-fold doors).
L to R:
36" DB,
36"gas cooktop and electric walloven underneath (couldn't put it in the planner)
36" DB
36" Sink Base
24" Dishwasher
49" Blind Corner Pullout
15" Trash Pullout
18" DB
*only have room for 10" overhang (in this plan)on peninsula side because of 8 ft. patio doors in LR. The patio doors begin just 6" past the kitchen.
Refrigerator wall L to R:
36" DB
30" Pantry Unit w/Drawers (will hide microwave in doors)
36" Frig.
The area across from the cooktop is where I want to put shallow pantry storage (thought it looked neat with the clear glass, but don't know if it's practical with glass shelves) The "Wall" at the end of the cooktop run of cabinets is really where bi-fold doors will be for laundry. I used a window as a door to the patio. Stairs are behind the frig. wall between the kitchen and dining room.
All of the "L" areaas it turns that corner is the existing laundry room. We want to utilize some of that space for more kitchen. I know it's narrow at only 7 ft. The dining room is our only place to eat (no breakfast room) so, this is why we're going to open up between the kitchen and living room to have bar seating.
We don't entertain much, have 2 kids, and on the go. I am pretty much the only cook and do alot of it from scratch. My goal is to keep everyone out of the cooking zone. So, by putting the frig. and pantry on one wall makes sense. I would have the microwave and breakfast foodsin the 30" pantry doors; Snacks and breads in the drawers. Dinner plates, bowls, and flatware in the 36" DB by frig.;glassware above in wall cabinet. The shallow pantry by cooktop will be utilized for can goods, etc.
Will the 49" corner cab. be big enough to house appliances; i.e., bread machine, standing-bowl mixer, toaster, tea maker, etc.? Don't like it all sitting out.
I know this is alot of info. Please let me know if I can clarify anything. I know you guys have great ideas and may see something I'm missing.
Hope you're able to pull the pictures. I used the Backebo.
I forgot to say that the door leading to the patio from the laundry area is not there yet. I'm thinking I won't have enough room with all the Base Cabinets I've put on that wall.
How about these changes: L to R: 30 DB, 36" cooktop/wall oven, 30" DB, 18 DB, then everything the same on the base cabinets. Then the hood could be a focal point with some blank wall on each side of the hood, along with18" wc's.
By frig., a 30" DB instead of a 36" DB.
Was wondering if 30" DB's are big enough for pots/pans/skillets, as well as casserole dishes and bakeware? Didn't know if some of you got 30" DB's and wish you had gone with the 36".
Anyone have another take on our floor layout? It's a weird shaped area.....but, I need a fresh perspective.
Are the pictures clear enough?
Also, does everyone think opening the wall up between the kitchen and living room is a good idea? I thought it would make it feel bigger; but, it will also be noisier in the early morning hours when someone's in there. Does anyone who has an open-floorplan like it? All of our rooms are closed off from one another.
How did I miss this?! I'll take a look at your floor plan and see if I can come up with something.
I can answer a couple of your questions, even though I am coming to the game late here...
The 30" deep drawers are fantastic. I have ALL my pots and pans in them, and a whole drawer full of casserole dishes and assorted bakeware. They are plenty big. The only thing that the 36" drawer would give me is room for my frying pans to lay straight instead of at an angle because of the handles.
We opened our kitchen to the living room, and love it. Yes, it's a tad noisy, but it usually is anyway. The only thing that really bugs me is the dishwasher, it's old and not too well insulated so it does make a bit of noise. Other than that, we all seem to get along fine with the noise levels, they don't seem any worse than they did before.
You can see my kitchen/greatroom setup in the Finished Kitchens forum.
Eva - I'm singing the Hallelujah chorus as we speak! I thought you guys forgot about me!! I was really bumming!
Anway, I realize that I'm not in any hurry like other people may be. We're not remodeling anytime soon. I'm just dreaming at this point (and drooling over everyone else's new kitchens).
Sounds great about the 30" cabinets. I think the 2nd plan would work out best then; didn't leave enough room for the door to patio, etc. with the 36". Still not sure what style we'll go with. I keep going back and forth - do I want the white with hardwood floors, etc. since I have white windows with stiles? or do I want a more contemporary style?
By the time we do our kitchen, they'll probably be new styles to pick from anyway.
Thanks for all your input, it's very much appreciated.
Sorry it took me so long to get to this! It's been crazy around here.
Anyway, here's my idea, it's kind of a modern, edgy plan but I think it will address your major concerns.
Along the window wall, I have positioned the range and sink pretty much where you had them. I also made the small peninsula you wanted. That cabinet at the end of the pen is a shelf unit, my idea is that you would probably use small electrics there such as a griddle, electric fry pan, fondue pot etc. and there would be electric right at the end of the peninsula.
The other two walls I have given you another option for keeping traffic out of the kitchen. Starting from the laundry room alcove area, I've given you a 30" tall pantry, fridge with deep overfridge cab. This area would be your primary food storage for cooking. In between is a 30" drawer unit topped with a 30" wall cab. This area would be your baking center, I envision the drawers being for your bakeware and equipment and the cabinet above would hold all the baking ingredients. Someone could be working at this station and be out of the way of the cook at the stove and sinkside prep area. Ignore the misplaced overfridge cabinet, it will be aligned with the tops of the other cabinets.
On the farther wall, I've created something I've found to be extremely functional in my own home for relieving traffic in the kitchen. It's a coffee bar with a small undercounter fridge. I've put two tall pullout pantries flanking a 30" drawer unit and a 15" trash pullout, with space for the fridge between. There's also glass cabinets above. In my house, we have our coffeemaker, toaster oven and blender on the counter, and our "bistro" dishes, glasses and coffee mugs in the cabinets above. It's a perfect place for snacks, breakfasts, lunchmaking and entertaining in the adjacent living room. The small fridge holds coffee creamer, milk, sodas, butter, juice, cream cheese. The pantry on the left side would house snack foods, coffee, tea, juiceboxes, the one on the right could hold linens etc. for the dining room.
I've left the sink/range wall empty of upper cabinets, to improve the view from the living room and not block the light from the window. I think you won't even miss upper cabinets on this side, and it gives you a nice countertop space as well.
