Well... long story short - we are returning our bed bought in some crappy store, after they failed to replace defective parts 5 times (well, all 5 times defects were the same). So I'm in search of the new frame.
I have couple of MALM drawers (2 night stand and one tall drawer) and liked when was assembling them (easy as 1-2-3 without even looking into instruction book)...
So my first thinking was IKEA and MALM's king bed frame.
Problem with me is that I weight slightly more than 250lbs. most previous beds (one made in Germany) broke pretty quickly.
I'm wondering, how will MALM frame work for me? Should I avoid it right away? Is there any ways to reinforce frame (metal and wooden parts) to make sure bed will last for at least 2-3 years?
Also, who about not installing any metal frame work, but just to use spring boxes on the metal frame which is sold in many mattress stores?
I believe you'll be fine weight wise - I've seen couples that weight much more than that together buy the Malm king.
As far as they metal components you do need that midbeam and cross bars. They help reinforce the bed and keep the headboard, footboard and sides from bowing out.
Ikea wooden slates are unnecessary if you are buying a boxspring mattress.

Re: MALM king size frame
The Malm frame is one of the best beds IKEA sells, and is usually less subject to the problems I have heard people have with other beds.
I've never seen or even thought of the idea of using a standard metal frame within an IKEA bed frame, but don't see why it wouldn't work. Those frames are only slightly wider and shorter than a box spring, so there's room within the IKEA frame for that metal frame to fit.
I like this solution very much.
If you use the regular metal frame, you won't use any of the metal IKEA bits.
