Image Title: From 24 inch wide door to wide open Description: The builder of my house installed a typical 24 inch wide door for an 80 inch wide closet. Accessing anything on either side was difficult and there was no lighting inside. Basically, a bad design. I removed the door and ripped out the entire wall to make it completely wide open. An IKEA Stolmen system was installed. My son can now easily reach his clothes.

Really nice job! I love the versatility and strength of the STOLMEN system. And the contrast of the bright white against the blue is very sharp looking.

Are you putting anything in front of the closet such as a curtain?
My original thought before starting this project was to use some type of curtain instead of a door. However, I saw a photo of a closet in an issue of Dwell that was exactly what I had in mind for this closet and they had no curtain or door at all. Why not leave it open! What, really, would be the purpose of closing it off unless you're trying to hide a cluttered mess? My son turns five December 1. We'll see in a year or two whether we'll need a curtain then. Besides, leaving it open makes the small room feel bigger.

Yep - same problem here. These bedroom closets are 80 inches wide and 96 inches tall with a single clothes rail and a single shelf just above the clothes rail. There's a lot of wasted space high up.
