14" deep shelves in PAX 24" cabinets?

I'm thinking the answer is yes after looking at the PAX cabinet assembly PDF, but figured it was worth confirming. After my last trip to IKEA I started thinking that a PAX system would work well in my master bedroom closet (2 sliding doors, closet is 94.5" H x 82.5" W x 25.5"D on the inside). And I was at the IKEA specifically for kitchen research!

Since the closet is (just) deep enough for the 24" boxes I'd rather go with that (more storage/flexibility), but the opening on my closet is only 78" high. So if I put a 24" deep shelf near the top I'd have only an inch and a half depth to reach over it, and might as well go with the 79" tall boxes. I'd rather not lose that much space up top if I don't have to, and figure if the 14" shelves will work then at least I'll still be able to see / reach into that upper space for infrequently-used items, the closet today has 12" shelves above the opening top and that works pretty well.

Thanks in advance. - Will

Re: 14" deep shelves in PAX 24" cabinets?

I'm not sure there is a central line of shelf peg holes on the side, so you'd have to make some to accomodate shallower shelves if you did that. Technically I see no reason why that would not work.

Is it possible to remove the header of the existing closet? It's only there to provide a place for the doors to go, and it's easy enough to remove if it isn't a bearing wall. A little patching and you'll access the entire vertical space.

I have this exact situation in my master bedroom...a ridiculous giant drywall frame around a very generous closet area. I'm considering removing all of it and filling the space top to bottom and side to side with Pax. It would allow me to use doors instead of sliders too.

Re: 14" deep shelves in PAX 24" cabinets?

True, I certainly could add holes if necessary. I'd rather not tear into this wall, it shouldn't be structural but it would make a bit of a mess out of the floor the way it's done right now. Granted removing the closet entirely and replacing it with a PAX system would add a bit of space to the room which is on the small side to begin with, but I don't think I want to do anything that drastic right now. Plus right now it matches the second bedroom, and I can't even do a hidden PAX there because the closet floor contains the crawlspace hatch.

The cabinet assembly PDF seems to show a middle-row of holes down the whole side panel, I'm hoping that these are appropriately-placed holes for the 14" items. Anyone know for certain?

Thanks. - Will

Re: 14" deep shelves in PAX 24" cabinets?

Hi Will.
Yes, the middle row of holes on the
deep PAX cabinet will work with the
shallow PAX shelves and shallow
KOMPLEMENT baskets etc.
