Re: Help with paint colors - putting house on the market
Ugh. But I have to say that while I think whitish is the answer for Kristen, I've seen that philosophy backfire, too. Up the island from me there's an old 50s cinderblock house that the owners updated most charmingly to a kind of tropical fantasy retreat: kiwi walls, melon door, bahama shutters, lots of tropical plants.
The realtor painted the house white, removed the shutters (which entailed removing the landscaping since it was all mushed by ladders and such), and now it sits forlorn, a boring white block again, with only the melon-colored door to tell you it's the same house (no buyer interest, either, as far as I can tell).
Re: Help with paint colors - putting house on the market
I've been watching some shows on hgtv over the past week and a half - shows like Designed to Sell and a couple of others where the home owners are having trouble selling their house, a team comes in and works on a few rooms ... and show how the house now appeals to a wider audience - I've not seen them paint any rooms white or off white ... they do use muted tones ... and declutter (both things sitting around and minimal furniture)- and set up the room to show off the room (size/architecture/focal points) ... I've seen them use light yellows, light blues, light greens and a light taupe color ... and then accesorize to bring in some brighter colors in accents - pillows/bedding etc.
Might be worth watching some of those shows before you make your decision on what colors to paint ... when you're selling your house you need to show off the house - not your things - not your style, not your personal stuff ... people need to walk in and feel like they could live in your house ... and imagine it with their furniture and things ... sooo many people have a problem visualizing so you need to make that as easy as possible but de-personalizing your home while it's on the market.

Re: Help with paint colors - putting house on the market
Doreen,
I've watched a bunch of those shows too. And I've been doing some reading. The general thought is that white reads as a builder or investor who just slaps something up there. The light, warm neutrals tend to give the feeling of actually wanting to live there. So, I went with two neutrals.
For Max's room we're doing Monroe Bisque
, and for Rose's room, it's Man on the Moon
They're both very light, very neutral, but still warm and will contrast enough with the white trim to make it look crisp and clean. I asked the woman at the paint store for suggestions and this is where we ended up.
Tomorrow, we try to start painting. We'll see how far we get this weekend. I had them tint the primer to 60% of the color, in the hopes that maybe we can get away with one coat of primer and one of paint. We shall see.
In other news, we did finish grouting the bathroom floor today. We tiled over the old 8" tan 80s tiles with some beautiful marble that we got for $2/sf. It's all grouted now, so all we need to do is replace the baseboards and reinstall the toilet and that room's done.
We're hoping to get the house on the market in February. Once this painting is done, we're getting a POD and getting rid of approximately 1/2 of our furniture and as much stuff as we can possibly part with. Fingers crossed!

Update: We went with the colors above and painted the kids room. It was heart-wrenching for me, but it looked great, though completely devoid of personality.
We cleared out a bunch of furniture and staged like crazy. Put the house on the market last Wednesday. It went under agreement on Monday. 5 days! Woo hoo!
Inspection is Sunday, so fingers crossed on that. We found a new house that we absolutely love in a perfect location. It's about a mile from where we live now, but is right over the town line so is in a great school district on a dead end street. It's perfect. Offer goes in this morning. Fingers crossed!
Re: Help with paint colors - putting house on the market
congratulations ... and fingers crossed for that inspection ... they are sure to find something that needs a little work... hopefully it's something small.
It sounds like you've found a wonderful new house too... I hope the negotiation on price/terms is quick and easy and that you breeze through that escrow - will you need to remodel the kitchen or bathrooms in the new house ?
