Holy moley! That looks great! Details?? How many of the big boxes? What's the vanity area made of? Any particular challenges or mods required? We'd love to hear - Kathy
The wiring requires a bit of explanation:
I wired an additional receptacle to the light switch with one plug-in live when the light switch is turned on. The other plug-in acts as a normal receptacle. Then, I plugged in two power bars. One power bar provides power to the Magiker lights, the vanity overhead lights, and the original ceiling light. So when the light switch is turned on, all these lights come on. The other power bar is mounted under the vanity counter and I plug in my curling iron, blow dryer, and halo mirror.
The vanity is a 100 x 35 x 201 PAX with the bottom of the unit used as the vanity counter. I used sheet cork on this vanity counter to protect against heat from the curling iron or any spills. I used the kick plate at the bottom but at the back of the PAX to finish off the unit where the back panel ended. I used a piece of 5/8" MDF, routered around the edges to make a decorative back panel for the vanity unit since it extends out from the wall and the back is not up against anything. The MDF is attached to the original closet frame for additional strength but these screws were hidden once the vanity PAX was attached to the MDF. I painted this piece of MDF the same color as the other walls. I would like to add some robe hooks to use this currently unused “wall” space. I used a regular tri mirror medicine cabinet and mounted it inside the PAX. I used a combination of cork panel and magnetized thumbtacks to organize all my jewelery. The overhead vanity light is a simple 3 light fixture you can get at any home building center. The halo make-up light was mounted on the inside of the vanity PAX and plugged into the same power bar as my curling iron and blow dryer. The vanity stool is my Grandmother's original vanity stool with a new covering. The retro rug is actually from Wal-Mart (sorry girls, but some things just had to come from other places….haha) and the funky vanity garbage can is from a discount grocery store.
My husband loves it and I wouldn't change a thing. It's great to have the vanity area so I don't have to struggle with curling my hair in the bathroom when my husband is having a long, steamy shower and un-doing everything I am trying to accomplish with my hair!
I was waiting for someone to notice there are no pulls on the doors yet......hahahaha......I guess I will have to go back to Ikea!
I only encountered two problems. One was drilling a grommet hole at the bottom of the vanity for the power bar wiring back to the receptacle. I’ve found that the PAX is made out of some crazy pressboard composite and it is tough on drill bits, saw blades, etc. It was tough going. The other problem was in shipment. I broke the total project down into 3 sections and hence, three orders (to save my sanity and my pocketbook). There wasn't a single shipment I didn't have problems with. I even had to order a second and third time on the first shipment. The problem was with both the freight company and Ikea's packaging. The corners of palletized items take a beating and the freight company wasn't overly kind to my shipments. But, at the same time, I think the corners of the packaging for the PAX frames need a packaging redesign. Even a small bump on the corner by the freight company meant a broken PAX frame. The hardware is also packaged at the end of the PAX frame box and if it got a bump, the hardware got bent.
Feel free to ask any other details.
Thanks for the rave reviews. It means a lot.

I purchased 2 of the birch pant racks in the spring when I was in Edmonton. The store told me they were being discontinued so I bought them there and sent them back to Manitoba by courier (since I was flying back and they were too big for the plane). At this point, I was only dreaming of my closet and hadn't even drawn any plans yet but I knew I wanted those pant racks. Now that I had the pant racks...........I had to go ahead with the rest of the closet.....hahaha.
Wowsa! That looks great! I hope you wouldn't mind if I posted your pictures on the site - we don't have that many of PAX, and yours is certainly a stand-out! I don't think there'd be any need to venture out if I had that closet...do you ladies?
