IKEA MALM Bed frame with SULTAN HARESTUA Spring mattress - do I need box spring or foundation?
I am planning to buy the following bed with the mattress. Do you think I would need a box spring or a foundation.
And the mattress says
Length: 189 cm
Width: 135 cm
Thickness: 17 cm
and bed says
Length: 201 cm
Width: 151 cm
Footboard height: 30 cm
Headboard height: 77 cm
Mattress length: 189 cm
Mattress width: 135 cm
Will the bed and the mattress fix properly or should I check out other mattresses

you don't *need* a box spring/foundation, but i'm sure some people have bought one for additional height. i think it detracts from the bed design. you only need the midbeam, slats, and mattress (with/without pad) in any combination you like. malm dimensions are the outer edges; the sides come up and flare out about 3-4 inches like a ledge. not so sure about the head/foot boards since my son's frame is still in pieces.
my ikea has each color malm set up and the ikea mattresses fit fine, and are on slats.

I just purchased the MALM recently (Queen).. I'd advise against the box-spring with this specific bed frame, unless your top mattress is very thin. With a box spring/normal mattress your bed height is going to be level or maybe only a few inches lower then the headboard on the lowest setting. This would (like others said) definitely take away from the design of the bed. You definitely are going to want slats though, you can make them yourself out of plywood/similar wood or buy any model at IKEA that fits your bed frame. There's two different settings for height on the MALM side-walls where you screw in the steel pieces to hold the mattress/slats. I tried the mattress without slats and found the steel pieces along the edge aren't wide enough to hold the mattress up and the mattress was pushing under them while laying on the bed. You'd eventually probably fall through the bed on either side of the center steel support rod. Slats are also going to give you anywhere from 1-3 inches in additional height under the mattress depending on which ones your purchase. With a good mattress and some slats the bed works great at either height setting.

oh you definitely want the slats with the malm! otherwise you have your mattress sitting on the floor! (i guess in that situation you could use a box spring on the floor within the frame and the mattress sitting on top? but why?
