I went to Ikea to get a Malm bed in birch with pine slats, but then found this article on my favorite Ikea site:

So I have two questions:
1. Is the 2011/12 white Malm glossy like the picture seems to make it? My store didn't have the bed, but given how the birch looks like (flatter/grayer than my daughter's Mandal birch bed), I think I'd like glossy white better (even though my room is all white... I'm going to need some color!)
2. Do I really need to spend $200 on slats? I got the pine because I don't need extra bounce/softness (my mattress will be perfect and its 10" of latex should be just fine). I looked into the laminated birch slats, but the store had a bed with those installed (badly?) and every time you'd sit on the bed you could hear them move around.
My only issue with the pine slats is that they may break. My kids beds have such slats and they've broken over time when the kids were walking on the bed. But will they on a king bed where pressure should be quite spread?
