How to change full/queen MALM bed frame to fit queen mattress?
The frame states that it would fit full and queen mattress but I can't for the life of me find how to make it fit a queen size mattress. The instruction shows different length for the bed but I don't see how it's physical possible to extend the length of the frame. The middle section with two columns of wood is much lower than the sides so am I supposed to rest the queen mattress only on the sides and bottom?

I have a full size Malm bed frame, and I don't think you can use a Full size Malm frame on a queen size bed. Queen mattresses are longer than full mattresses, and the sides of the Malm bed don't extend. I'm not too sure if Ikea redesigned the frames (I got my Malm Jan. 2007), so perhaps someone who bought one recently could tell you.

I just realized my mistake. The bed is actually a full/double not a full/queen. The HAMAR is universal and can be lengthen to fit queen and king. The instruction shows two illustrations with two different lengths so I thought it was adjustable.
I don't know what to do at this point. Since the slides sit lower than the frame itself. I'm going to have to put something on the slides to make the queen mattress sit flush with the side of the frame.

If you're going to rest the mattress on the sides of the bed, you're going to also need to find a way to raise the hamar midbeam. The sides of the bed alone won't be enough to hold up the mattress, since the only thing connecting the sides to the head and footboards are the wooden dowels and some screws.

Re: How to change full/queen MALM bed frame to fit queen mattress?
There are four sizes of beds in the IKEA range - twin, full/double, queen and king. As you progress through the sizes, the head- and foot boards and sides change; the mid-beam remains the same. If your "queen" mattress doesn't fit in the opening of your "queen" bed frame, something is wrong - one of them is not a queen.
The Malm bed is designed so that the mattress or box spring sit a few inches below the top of the frame. If you have only a mattress, then you'd use the higher of the two sets of holes for the long metal "L" bracket and the two "clips" which hold the mid-beam; the mattress will sit on the bed slats, about 3 inches below the top of the bedsides. If you have a mattress and box spring, the box spring sits about 5 inches below the top of the frame, with the mattress higher than the frame; you don't need the slats if you have a box spring.
Re: How to change full/queen MALM bed frame to fit queen mattress?
I finally bought the Malm queen size bed frame at the sale the day after thanksgiving (I've never gone out and waited hours in line before) and when I got it home I tried something I have been thinking of for a year. I assembled just the frame (headboard, footboard, and sides), did not attach any of the metal supports, and then set my queen size box spring on the floor inside it and the mattress on the spring. It looks great - the height is comparable to just using a mattress with the slats rather than raising it up by using the side supports so it looks ridiculous with the headboard. I'm not too worried about the frame spreading because there is no weight or pressure on the frame itself - the mattress just pushes down on the box spring. I thought of several ways to cover the few inches of the box spring that show under the sides but haven't bothered yet because you can't see it unless you get down on the floor at the sides of the bed. I've tucked away all the unused parts in case I ever go to the slats/spring setup. Anyone else tried this?
