Subs are almost done. Now the real fun starts.

Progress in my kitchen remodel has moved full steam ahead this week. As I wrote in an earlier post, the plumber took care of his end on Monday and the electrician started his yesterday.

The electrical work was quite a bit more extensive than the plumbing. I need a 220v circuit added for the new double-ovens, an isolated circuit for the new microwave, the addition of an entire new circuit of outlets, 4 new recessed can lights, relocation of a few other outlets and switches, replacement of two bad breakers and the rearrangement of the breaker box to accommodate the new circuits. It didn't originally sound like that much, but it quickly revealed itself to be a sizable project.

I could have some of this myself - the easy stuff that doesn't result in death by electrocution if you screw it up - but in the interest of time, I chose to have it all done by a pro. The only thing I will do is the final installation of the switches and outlets.

Unfortunately, after asking everyone I knew to ask, nobody had an electrician they could recommend. I was forced to do the unthinkable - look in the Yellow Pages. That is, yellowpages.com. A search for electricians in my area revealed about a dozen options, but only a couple of them had customer reviews which immediately narrowed my search. A quick read through the reviews narrowed it down to one. I know I'm supposed to get three bids and likely take the one in the middle, but I didn't have time for that. I wanted this job done before my 2-week vacation starts next week. The bid was decent, the owner of the company came out to do the estimate himself and was nice and knowledgable, and they had time in their schedule to fit me in. Sold.

Yesterday was the first day of the job so I stayed home from work. The guy showed up on time and after talking through all the locations for everything (which I had measured out and indicated in advance), he got right to work. After one day, all the boxes were placed, all the wire was run, and everything was left nice and clean.

Today, the job is expected to be completed. The changes and connections to the breaker box will be made and the recessed lights installed. If nothing comes up to halt progress, I'll have a completed electrical and plumbing phase by the end of the day - precisely when I had hoped to have it done. I'm only one week in to the project, but so far I'm right on target.

This will probably be my last post for a couple of weeks. Not being in the office sitting at my computer all day, I'm far less likely to carve out the time to post. Besides, I'll be hard at work in the kitchen. When I return, I'll have lots more to share. Until then, I hope everyone has a great holiday!!
