Hey... i've been referenced on a thread! I feel famous now (btw I'm a "he".. but I realize it wasn't necessarily obvious since I talk about my bf)
Sorry about that Turnip - that was very un-PC of me to jump to that conclusion. I'm from Vancouver after all, I should know better! But in my defence, 'Turnip' wasn't much of a clue either.

Yes, thats true..... the story behind Turnip is another topic....
I've always wanted to go to Vancouver and almost did for work this year but ended up not happening. Is Vancouver like the "New York" of Canada? Progressive, liberal etc.? (Maybe I should say the San Fran of Canada?)
I wonder if we convinced the thread starter to go with NYB?
i'm with you Zeuss, i assumed "her" as well from Turnip, and I'm from deep in the community in San Francisco... I was the token straight girl for ages in my group....
Yes, Vancouver is very liberal, progressive etc. We even have the dubious distiction of being the Pot capital of North America. This place is filled with activists of every variety. It actually makes it a very cool place to live - as well as being one of the most beatiful cities around (when its not raining - which isn't as often as everyone thinks).

can't wait to hear the story behind the name
I can't wait to hear the Turnip story either - and if you should have know better being from San Fran and the token straight girl, I've got no excuse - I go to DESIGN school. There are more straight men backstage at a Broadway musical than in the deisgn community!
Vancouver really is that gorgeous, but it does rain for days on end. But I'm told we don't actually get near as much rain as Seattle. The Art Institute where I go to school is in one of those office towers you see in that photos and I am forced to look out and see that city every day!
But here is the part of the city I live in just east of the downtown area. This photo is looking east and my house would be under the 1st "o" in photos (the big diagonal photos, not the little photos at the bottom):
And arial photos make the land look flat, but that is quite a steep rise and hill I live on. The inlet of the ocean you see is where we took the Christmas a few weeks ago.
I thought Turnip was female too, and I apologize. Apparently I'm a vegetable bigot: I swear it was the name! Turnips just seem very feminine, even pregnant!
I was told i could go to this conference there for work and then they kinda changed their mind.
The Turnip story isn't that interesting actually.... and if I went into all the details it would probably nauseate you with cheesiness!
Basically, it's the name of a stuffed pug dog I gave my bf; we want a dog one day if and when we move in together in the city. Turnip is like our mascot.
There's more to it but i don't want to turn this into the "Schmoopy" episode of Seinfeld!
