I was up early yesterday (~4:30) listening to the wind. I couldn't get back to sleep, thinking a tree might fall on the house. Like there was anything I could do about it! So it was not a great start to the day. We did lose one full-of-woodpecker-holes tree, and lots of small branches came down, but nothing hit the house, thankfully. After church, I was able to take a 3+ hour nap, then we went out for dinner. Ended up a very good day.
Zeuss, thank you for taking the time to post all those pictures. I'm showing my kids. Everyone's meals and gardens sound and look fabulous. Best of all, we had families to share them with.
I did not know an asparagus server even exsisted. How does it work? Or is just like a cake server without the pointy end?
The reason the asparagus server works so well is the curved part near the handle. The flat part slides under the asparagus, the holes let the extra butter drip through. Then you roll it down the the curved part to carry it to your plate. Best thing ever.
Aparently you can get asparagus tongs, but I haven't seen those for most silver sets.
Southern Silver takes the handles of regular dinner knives and puts new ends on them. My asparagus server isn't vintage - it is new. But many silver patterns made them originally, but they are rare and hard to find. So I got a 'new' one.
Thanks so much for the explanation and photo - I am going to put that on my "want list"
Just check out the website Southern Silver they have them in all different silverware patterns. Plus Replacements, Ltd. also makes them up for your pattern.
I had salad servers made using the vintage handles and stainless steel new parts added. I also had a lasagna server and a bread/cake knife. I might get the pasta server too. These things suit our modern lifestyle but weren't available when my silver was make (1937). I've been added to my standard 9 place settings on ebay. There are some neat things to find - but alot of it is way over priced.
It is so sad that right now, most silver is sold on ebay for scrap. This ebay auction is for my set and is going really cheap, but will go for scrap not use most likely. Some of the sellers I bought from have been so glad that it was going to a home where it will be used and not melted down.
Happy belated Mother's Day to all of you as well. I had a wonderful first mother's day. My best present was my little week-old daughter. DH got me a card from him and one from her. Then I spent the day relaxing with my little baby. While she was asleep, DH and I spent time on the couch putting a bunch of her first photos into a digital baby book in shutterfly. I should receive it in a week or so. It was a nice relaxing Mother's Day activity and just my speed for this wonderful time.
I got my mom petite roses from her new little grandaughter, Rose. I had them delivered to her work and it made her cry - plus she got to show them off to everyone. Mission accomplished
