We've owned our house for nearly 7 years... It has a planter at the entry way (on the right hand side kind of defining a foyer area). We tried live plants in the beginning and then had fake ones for the next 6.5 years as the live ones never survived... They got smooshed with all the stuff that came into the house and/or was set on the box to get taken out of the house...
FINALLY, I came up with a much better idea-- polished black river rock! I had to built up a bit of the base area (I used leftover IKEAwood parts from the kitchen and some misc. cardboard)and then I put in a black plastic trash bag and then I topped it wil the river rocks-- it looks awesome! (I just wish I'd thought of it some time earlier in the past 6.5 years!)
I know I should take a picture but the digital camera is down at our office...
Those planters were pretty common in 50s style homes...usually they were filled with white landscape rock, so your black river rocks update that theme in a modern way!
These must have been popular in the late 70's too. We had five built in planters of various sizes in our house. They were filled with tree bark of some type. After we got our dogs we turned two of the planters into little canine fiefdoms. Here is a picture of Brody's. Mia had one almost like it. There is an exercise pen there, but it is kind of hard to see.
If you live in a house with a planter that opens through the slab or into the crawlspace below you should definitely have your home tested for radon. I had friends I grew up with who had a similar planter and it was a source of massive radon coming into their home. Hate to be gloom & doom but it is worth noting as it can be easily fixed.
