I am so frustrated...I want to redo my bathroom while my DH is out of town, and there is NOTHING...absolutely NOTHING...out there that compares to IKEA cabinets and other stuff that will work better or be cheaper!

But I can't get to IKEA until he gets back!

All I need is a little wall cabinet, a mirror, a lighting fixture and a couple of CD-size baskets...and maybe a little drawer thing. So I've been scouring the mall stores, Home Depot, etc. and I just can't settle for the garbage that's out there in RTA when I know there's IKEA quality for less.

But I want to get it done!!

:X:X:X

Ohhh...I feel your pain. I NEED ACTION to feel the happiness! No action= angry malaise! I truly dislike not finding what I need/want when I have the bug to make things happen!!

Although I might edit your title to "You know, this NON-IKEA thing can cause stress sometimes!"

Can I just vent about how unbelievably stupid other cabinets can be?!:X

I bought this medicine chest from Target. $70. I opened the box expecting to have to assemble the thing, but it was already fully assembled. Nice. Until I realized that I really wanted the door to open the other way. No way to change it. Bummer. OK, got to hang it on the wall, so I look at the instructions. They show some sort of D ring contraption, which I think is kind of odd, so I turn the cabinet over. You know what I find?

FOUR keyhole hangers.

Now, keyhole hangers are on my top 10 list of things I never want to see again. And it takes a lot to make that list, let me tell you! So now here I am confronted by not one, not two, but FOUR. Which means that the chances of me getting each screw in the right place area about 1:23 million. Or, pretty much no chance.

So I valiantly canoodle solutions. I decide a template is the way to go. I make one out of cardboard, that doesn't work well. Then I make one out of wrapping paper, which I can cut precisely level. That doesn't work either. Then I measure. I finally take the plunge and install the anchors in the precise points they need to go. I call my young son in to help me. I have him stand on the vanity, and explain the entire process. Out of all the pieces of this maddening puzzle, he is a wild card.

I get one bottom screw into the keyhole. He nearly gets his in, fifteen times. Finally he manages to get the bottom one in. I can see the top one, but of course when you try to get that one in, the bottom one comes out. After about half an hour of trying, I become convinced that the bottom two are the only ones we will get.

I decide to do it the old fashioned way and screw the cabinet to the studs through the top back strap. Which is MDF. I secure it on one stud, check for level.

It is not level.

I remove the screw.

I take the cabinet off the screws in the keyholes.

I hold it to the wall and level it.

I threaten my son with death if he allows it to move a millimeter while I prepare to screw the cabinet to the wall. OK, not death, but something close to that. I really don't remember, because I was crazed at this point.

I screw the cabinet to the wall, check for level, secure it. Find the other stud and screw that one in.

The cabinet is now level and secure.

Four anchors and screws have lost their lives in the wall. My son has escaped bodily injury, but is slightly traumatized.

I am sweating and cranky.

Fie on you, Target!

Don't even get me started on the Walmart spacesaver.

There are stores other than ikea? Who knew?

Seriously, eva, you should repost this in the "why ikea" thread!

I so know the feeling. Our closest IKEA is 5 hours away and everytime I call about an item they are out of stock or they don't answer me. So I check my local places (HD and Lowes) and they don't compare in quality or price. There are so many things in the catalogue that would go nicely with my soon to be finished kitchen.
