Cat friendly carpet

We're in the middle of a gut and re-do of our soon to be family room. Before, it was fondly called the cr*p room, given that it was poorly put together with paneling on the walls and extension cords for electrical. We've taken it down to the studs, redone the electrical, and are insulating now. Drywallers are coming sometime in the next two weeks (I hate doing drywall!).

So, the room is coming together, which means we need a floor. The rest of our house is hardwood. This is going to be a family room, and we're hoping to have kids in the near future, so I really want carpet here. Nice and soft and comfy is what I'm going for. The problem is, I have two cats, both with claws, and both who love to knead carpet. I've had a berber before and it looked terrible after a month. Is there any carpet out there that might be more cat and claw friendly?

Any thoughts or experiences?

Thanks,
Kristen

So it's more cat RESISTANT carpet that you're looking for? 'Cause I think they are all friendly as far as the cats are concerned. I really don't know what would be effective, my Mom's got berber in her room and it too looked awful after a while. I'd probably just go with a really good quality traditional carpet? With good pading under it and DEFINITELY scotchguard it.

We stuck with hardwood, and honestly it hasn't been an issue with the kids at all. Once you see how NOT fragile they are, and how they bounce off furniture, walls, each other, random objects and occasionally the ceiling, you'll probably find that padding the floor is kinda ::shrug:: unneeded?

That said, have you considered area rugs instead of carpet? That way you could easily replace/move them, and even change them out for different seasons...

James,

Yes, Cat Resistant is a good way to put it. I think the desire for carpet goes beyond the kid issue. Really, I like to sit on the floor and play games or watch TV, and I miss having a comfy place to do that kind of thing. Somehow, area rugs just aren't the same, and they always seem to move on me.

I'm thinking that a traditional carpet (cut pile) will be better than the berber, but I guess we'll just have to take a guess and give it a try.

Cut Pile! Yup, that was the phrase I was looking for...

How about one of the sectional carpets? The ones that are made as modules that connect together? That way when an area gets totally trashed/stained you can pull it out and replace it? I've never used one, but the IDEA seems like a good one. Honestly, having seen the sheer quantity of grunge/crumbs/cat fur etc that we and/or roomba get up off the floor I kinda shudder to think of it all getting caught in a rug. But I can also understand having a nice comfy place to lay down on the floor. Esp when it starts getting cold in winter... We heat our basement with a wood stove to give us the effect of radiant floors . But when the stove's not going the floors are pretty chilly. ::shiver::

Sectional carpet - like the carpet squares. That sounds like something I could definitely look into. Don't know if it'll work down the stairs, but definitely something to look at for the main room.

Some cats can't get enough olefin - it's cat crack, but only for certain cats. Lots of berbers have some olefin. You might consider putting that on your list of things not to get.
Berbers were really popular for a while, but I've seen so many with unattractive poorly-done seams or pulled up loops. I think the older, 100% wool berbers were a whole different animal that the new synthetic ones.

We had a frieze that loooked good and was very cushy. Combine any carpet with extra heavy, thick pad and it will feel good and last longer.

Eva - Thanks for the reccommendations. That leather is very cool!

Apri - I had no idea about the olefin. Maybe that's why my cats couldn't get enough of that carpet. I've read a bit about the frieze, and it sounds like it might do the trick. Thanks!

Surprisingly, for me, I like the leather too. Wonder if it comes in a nice butter yellow to go with my newly outfitted chairs? Which reminds me...I still need to take and post pictures of them completed.

kisaacs - You might hit a carpet store and ask for a few samples to take home. Now, granted, it won't be the same without padding, but it will give you an idea of the comfort level of the fibers, and if you can guide your cat onto it, maybe give you and idea of the cat-proofedness.
