Hat's off to IkeaFans for participating in the "protest" today - thank you for your concern. It's important for us to realize what our government is doing (as well intentioned as it may be).
It was important to us as well. I'm not sure if many of you know this, but we've been up to Capitol Hill the last 3 years running to talk to our representatives and those from other states about the importance of hearing the voices of small business in making decisions regarding protecting our members and visitors' privacy, internet censorship and so forth.
We sincerely believe that WE are the new face of small business and we have to speak up if we want to be heard. It's a brave new world...
Just to be clear: We're absolutely PRO privacy and anti-piracy regulation. The problem is that the legislators drafting the laws have absolutely NO CLUE what the impacts and potential abuses would be, and when special interests like the RIAA start getting involved the result is a VERY skewed version that could totally cripple one of the very few bright spots in the US economy.
The potential abuses of SOPA/PIPA are staggering, it's so horribly riddled with holes that I'd almost suspect someone crafted it that way specifically.

The whole blocking DNS part of the bill is inherently flawed. it will NOT stop the folks that are actually trying to steal copyrighted material at all. It WILL allow a lot of abuses and make it unbelivably difficult to operate a user generated content content site like IKEAFANS, but those that pirate music and movies will simply bypass the DNS system itself, it's easy to do.
The entertainment industry needs to change what THEY do, not try to reshape the rest of the world to compensate for their lack of the ability to keep up with the changing face of technology.
iTunes, Netflix, Spotify, and Rdio.
THESE are models for how you deal with the problem. The RIAA has done an incredibly abysmal job of changing with the times, and they want to drag the rest of the world back in time rather than adapt how they do business.
