Senior 3qt pot - Care and feeding?

I picked up one of these in asis for $29 (just a small ding on the handle) but I have never had cast iron before. How do I take care of the darn thing. Is there a coating on the inside or do I need to season it? Does any one have any tips or info on the care and use of this pot?

Great find! I have a few enameled cast iron pots, and I always hand wash and try to avoid metal tools that will scrape the interior. The enamel inside is pretty durable, but I want mine to last a hundred years! Does "senior" have the light colored enamel inside, like Le Creuset? If so, I don't think there's a way to keep it from getting a bit discolored, but that's okay. It will work beautifully. You don't season a pan like that because the enamel acts as its own form of non-stick.

Hey Wendy! Good to see you again.

If you have trouble with a bit of discoloration on the bottom of the pot, try using Barkeeper's friend. You can find it at Wal-Mart for about $2 a can with the cleansers. It has a bit of oxalic acid which eats right through most anything.

Don't believe the can where is says you can use it on stainless unless you have brushed stainless, AND only wipe in the same direction of the brush marks, otherwise, it can and will scratch your stainless. But it's great for other things! I heart Barkeeper's Friend.

Good deal!

Cast enameled iron is GREAT!

And I (obviously) second what Susan said about Barkeeper's friend. You can probably find it at Walmart, and it's GREAT stuff. It does a superb job on glass, enamel etc.

I just bought Barkeepers friend for my stainless cookware and agree that it works great.

I am not sure if the inside of the senior is enameled or cast iron, I can't tell it's black inside. Any one have one of these. I am looking forward to cooking with it as it's my first cast iron.

It's been great with the remodel. I got rid of all my old everything and it's wonderful to have new.

Question Is the inside smooth?

If it's smooth to the touch it's probably enameled. Bare cast iron is very rough, about like rough sandpaper after all the edges have been worn off.

James

Well.. Maybe not THAT rough, but it's quite porous and clearly non-smooth.

Ok, I think it is cast iron inside. Do you think I need to season it or is it preseasoned. My Ikea had no idea.

As one who has several Lodge cast iron pieces, the color suggests it's preseasoned. Raw cast iron pieces (ie. the regular Lodge, not Lodge Logic) are gray in color.

Any which way, it doesn't hurt to do it some more. Pretty simple to do so too ... just cook some bacon in it. Saturated fats make for good coating on cast iron pieces.

To clean, hot water and a stiff brush. Dry before storing to prevent rust, either with a towel or on the stovetop. NEVER wash them in a dishwasher.

Ask an IKEAn for the care instructions sheet...

that comes with it. We have 2 of these and hubby loves them!
I;ll ask how he cares for them.

Thanks for all the info. I cooked up some bacon/spinich pasta yesterday and followed everyone's directions. Love the pot and recommend it.
