My sewing desk

A few have asked about my sewing area so here are some photos to help explain.

Here is my section of the home office. The upper cabinets are Effectiv wall cabinets, the 3-drawer stack on the lower left is Ikea kitchen 15" 4-drawer with the top drawer cut off. The single door is a 15" drawer/door with the drawer cut off. The final square unit is from a scrapbooking company and holds 12x12 file folders.

And here is what it looks like in sewing mode:

The sewing machine lift and serger lift are from Lee Valley Tools. Here is the sewing machine lift in operation - all the way up to access the sewing arm:

Just push down gently on the top of the machine and it clicks down to this:

I need to make a plexiglass cover to fit my machine so there are no gaps. The sewing surface is level with the countertop.

Now just push it down again:

and it is gone. I just put the cover back on and can use the surface for other things.

The serger is on an kitchen appliance lift and there is an ironing board in the top drawer.

More office photos to follow as I tidy up. Until then, here is the other end of the office room - not so tidy, but very Ikea!

Re: My sewing desk

Yup - the serger is just on a mixer lift. It worked better with my old serger, but my new Husqvarna serger is bigger and I have to make sure the thread 'tree' is all the way down or it gets caught on the counter edge. You have to take the thread catching bag off to put it down.

Re: My sewing desk

My scrapbooking is in cabinets made by Cropper Hopper, but they don't make them any more. These are similar:

Re: My sewing desk

We copied the scrapbooking cabinets and built this wall of cabinets in our garage. We're not great woodworkers, but they work.

And inside, I keep all my paper in vertical 12x12 paper holders.

Re: My sewing desk

We added some moldings to the Effektiv wall cabinets to simulate Decor mouldings in the kitchen line. I wanted task lighting so there are 4 mini flourescent tubes to light the work space.

On the wall below the cabinets are Ikea shelves that support my stamp collection (I have a problem, I admit it.)

That is Wellington, my 16 year old kitty who always hangs out by the keyboard.

Re: My sewing desk

And here is my hubby's side of the office:

A full sized Effektiv cabinet on the wall. We shorted that CPU holder (I don't remember the Ikea name) so it could fit under the desk and pull out for easy access to the cables in the back. Not visible on the far right is an Effective box/box/file cabinet that is on wheels. We pull it out to use the scanner that sits on the top. (I think I'll go help him purge his stuff)

You know there is nothing I would rather do! I love thinking about this stuff. To me, an interior designer is first and foremost, a problem solver.

And of course, brainstorming with a kindred spirit - it wouldn't get any better than than!
