Bought a Tylosand sofa from Craigslist but would like to wash the covers, but the tag says no wash, dryclean. Any suggestions?
Can I get away with throwing them into the washing machine, or will they shrink, or worse? If I do dryclean them, will any drycleaners do or do you need a special type of drycleaners?
I'm bumping this old post because I had the same question -- anyone try washing their Tylosand covers? I'm waaay too cheap to dry clean and I don't like all those chemical anyway!
i joined this website just to answer this question.
i was going to wash my covers since i had gotten some pen marks on it that were driving me crazy. the tag says no dry clean, but the ikea website mentions machine wash or dry clean. so i went on some searches and found mixed reviews. also, i some places mention washing in cool water so it doesnt shrink, but the tag and site says warm water. i went with the tag. i washed in my machine using warm water. it was warm and bright yesterday so i dried the pieces outside on some chairs. dried perfectly, fit perfectly, and no pen lines!
Thanks Sunshine, for updating this old thread with an answer from someone who has been there, done that. Mutual aid is what makes Ikeafans such a great place to hang out!
Isn't it true that washing in warm water isn't what causes clothes to shrink? I always thought that it was throwing things in the dryer for too long or at too high of a temperature.
We don't wash things in hot/warm water in our home, unless it's whites we want to bleach. Predominently, we use cold water wash, and in most cases we line dry things. I guess you could say we're a little cheap about that! But it does save us money so we can live the good live and shop at IKEA more often!

The "Warm Water" instruction means, 'no hotter than warm'. Cold water is fine.
Warm water can slightly shrink some fabrics. But it is hot water and dryers that do the real, shrinkage damage.
I don't have a "line" to dry them. I use one of those tall roll-about racks that you can hang hangers on. I use pants-type hangers with clips or spring closure. I use those to hang the covers from the rack and they dry great.
I wash mine in cold water, with biodegradable, low suds, Seventh Generation Detergent or Country Save. No shrinkage at all, the colors stay brighter and kind to the planet.
power2hour, that's pretty odd that your covers got destroyed. I've washed my covers plenty of times (like, once a month during warmer months!!) and I have not had a problem with the covers. I DID however try to wash the inner cover (with the top cushion part) and that cushion liner pretty much disintegrated. But that was totally my fault for thinking it would be ok to wash it (i had a sick cat and she peed on the couch. NO amount of enzyme cleaner seemed to cut it. So I really didn't have much to lose). Now that was cushion with the inner line is all bumpy/ lumpy. I plan on buying a cheap comforter and just 'rewrapping' the cushion. Hopefully that works.
I wonder if you can tell us what kind of washer you have for future reference? I know I have an extremely old front loader and haven't ran into those kinds of issue.
Sunshine537, I have a top loading washer. Perhaps I washed it on hot when it should have been on cold? How do you wash yours? Also, what color/fabric do you have? Mine is Everod Natural.
I'm still complete paranoid about washing the (new) covers in fear they'll be torn to shreds!
Based on the recommendations here, I put my slipcovers in the wash. TOTALLY DESTROYED!!! Don't do it people... I just got this sofa, and now I have to purchase slipcovers!!!
