I recently walked in the Great Indoors and wandered into the countertop section. Originally, I had an eye for a light to medium colored granite or quartz type material for my counters to go with my adel medium brown cabinets. My floors are ceramic 16x16 traventine looking. Even though I had an eye towards going with light counters, my brother and my mom are urging me towards a darker color. Also the salesmen recommended the tan brown granite to go with my cabs. The Tan brown is a dark chocolate brown, almost black, with reddish bronze coloring throughout. The price seems right - about $39.00 a square foot. That granite and I believe 3 others were on sale for that price. Sorry can't recall the names. 2 others were dark, almost black and one seemed to be of the Saint Cecilia variety. I wish I could post pics but I have no idea how.
Anyone familiar with tan brown? Will it look good with adel medium brown in a small galley kitchen? Also, is this a good price?
$39 is very good- just need to understand what they charge for cuts and installation. Cheaper than any solid surface or quartz.
It's hard to recommend anything without seeing the rest of your room- what you describe certainly seems like it would work, but again, we'd really need to see a photo to give any feedback.
Get an AMB door, a sample of the floor tile, sample of the granite, and a nice big sample of your paint color and any fabrics and lay them out together in the kitchen so you get an idea of what the light will be like and how they go together. Take a photo of this and upload here- THEN we'll have comments galore!
I have seen very dark stones with Adel MB (or with cabinets that are very similar in color and style) and they can look really sharp. However, so can light colored granite. The most important thing is what you feel comfortable with.
Do you have samples, and a sample door, so you can look at home? It's important to see what you think of it in your lighting. If you have photos, they are really easy to upload into our galleries. I would be glad to help you with the process if you like
i don't know where you live (take a moment and fill out the profile ), but in my area i can beat that quote easily and pretty cheap install too...
or was the $39 including install?
here are some pics of adel mb with blue pearl (pretty dark) and Raw Silk (medium to lightish, lots of pink)

i also had a light travertine in my master bath with my adel mb, but can't find pics of it (the other two are from my mom's house)
We're doing chestnut tan brown in our kitchen, and although we're doing custom doors (natural hickory), if I were to use one from IKEA's lineup it would definitely be Adel MB. I think the tones are very complementary, especially if the overall vibe of the vicinity is warm and/or earthtones. Of course I love the tan brown granite--I think the pink "eyes" give it a lot of depth and character.
We're doing Tan Brown with Adel Medium Brown cabinets. The counters are being installed on Wednesday. We have something like 50 square feet of granite, and installed, including a 1/2 bullnose edge and two cut-outs (undermount sink and cooktop), it's costing us about $4,000. That's about $80/sq ft installed. And that was a sale price. Of course, I'm in the Washington, DC suburbs, so...
ETA: that square footage includes a 4" backsplash along the counters.
jim, did you go slab or prefab? around here prefab is such a good way to go except for specialty pieces or if you want a special edging, otherwise the fabrication already being done cuts down so much time. Course i'm in SF where we have lots of chinese imports.
Dulci,
We're slab. Our counters are such an odd length, I didn't think we'd be able to go prefab. Prefab probably would have significantly dropped the price, though.
see, that's what i meant specialty piece... though our prefabs go up as far as 10ft on most granites and have a ton of choice. globalization is a reality, might as well put it to work

DulcineaK, thanks for the pics. I live on the east coast, NJ to be exact. The $39.00 including install and the standard square edge, which I love since I am going for the contemporary look. They did charge extra for the sink and faucet cutouts - a little under $300.00. Are there other questions I should be asking? I guess I should ask what install means - does it include measurement and templating? Is there every a charge for transport and deliver of the slab itself? I guess I am just curious if there are ever any suprise costs involved?
I do wish we here on the east coast had the same access to prefab as our friends on the west coast. I did find one vendor who sold prefab but they only had 4-5 colors and I wasn't in love with any of them. I think each slab only measured about 8' max and cost around $250 a piece (slab only).
DulcineaK, which you happen to know any vendors of prefab on the east coast?
I will try to take some pics and upload tonight to get everyone's opinion.
