I know the Fagerland doors are solid pine and therefore paintable, but what about Tidaholm doors with the veneer. I figure the oak frame is paintable, bot sure of the veneer panel. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

I've been resisting all day, can't hold it in any longer:

They're *all* painable, if you catch the corner with your shin.

Okay, now that I've got that out of my system...

I'd guess that any of the real-wood doors would be paintable, whether solid or veneer. You'd probably want to buff them with fine sandpaper or steel wool to take the gloss off the varnish.

I'd be leery of trying to paint the melamine or thermofoil finishes, like Arlig, Stat and the white or cream Adel; I wouldn't expect the paint to stick well, and I doubt buffing would work without damaging the door.

All of the above is only a guess. The best thing to do would be buy a single door of the ones you are considering, and experiment. They're not that expensive (you can probably get some in the As-Is room), and then you'd know.

Pretty funny thanks for the laugh and thanks for the information. Heading back out to IKEA this afternoon and visiting the *AS-IS* section.

stars -- sorry, I've been sick the last few days and I'm on a limited posting plan...:?.

We are planning to paint IKEA doors white, and in our quest, we've so far purchased a Backebo door and a Kalsebo door in the AS-IS room. I think Kate1234 is planning to paint a Tidaholm door to see how that goes. If you do a search on "painting doors" you should come up with a bunch of threads discussing the issue of late.

Re: painting over veneer. Cabinet Coat is a type of paint available through some ACE Hardware stores, and through some Benjamin Moore dealers that supposedly can paint over just about anything and leave a nice hard finish. I think that's the route we're going to take, just have to find some!

Good luck, and let us know how your trials go...

Susan

Actually, I messed around with painting some Arlig and Applad doors with some success. It's just very labor intensive and the prep is a killer. Cabinet Coat is approved for use on melamine, but can only be tinted in pastel shades.

AH, the age old question of paint-ability. Officially the company line is no door can be painted. They're not designed to sanded, or altered in any way as to allow for painting. That being said, I've met customers who've had limited success in painting doors. The work is hard, long and painstaking. For instance, the Aplad white door is a solid MDF with a foil finish applied. You can't sand it. Sanding would eat through the foil and then you're done. People have tried spraypaint to no avail. The thing is, you need something that will bound chemically to the finish in order to change the door.

For wood doors the outlook is a little more rosy. The Adel doors, for instance, are solid birch either clear lacquered or lacquered in medium brown. To paint them, you have to remove the lacquer, done either with copious amounts of sanding or terpentine. LIke before, I've had customers come back with moderate success doing this but mostly it's a disaster. If you're going to try and change the color of the doors, I'd reccomend just going elsewhere to buy your cabinets. IKEA products are generally not meant to be altered and those that can be don't normally give a consistent finished over and over again. You might get one door a chestnut brown and another walnut and another mahagony.

Where do you get the Cabinet Coat? I went into Home Depot and they had never heard of it, and that may be true since it could be a speciality blend or brand.

Anything's paintable if you get the right materials! I high adhesive, oil-based primer will stick to pretty much anything. I painted my ugly laminate cabinets when I first moved in as a temporary fix (almond has no place in my color scheme). I had very good results. Not one door has scratched in nineteen months.
