Question Kvartal: could I use track on both top and bottom?

Hello,

I wonder if it would be possible to attach curtain panels to Kvartal track on both the top and the bottom. Has anyone tried this, or can anyone who has used Kvartal give me an opinion?

I am considering curtain panels to go between a railing and the ceiling beside a stairwell. (The height is about 5 feet.) I'd like to discourage kids from sitting on the railing.

I thought it would help to put track along the top of the railing.

If I buy twice as much track and twice the number of top rails, should I be able to use a second "top" rail on the bottom of each curtain panel? Would I have to do something to the panels to accomplish this (I don't know how they attach)? Then would I be able to attach both ends of the panels to the tracks?

Thank you very much,

Schoolhouse

Re: Kvartal: could I use track on both top and bottom?

Well, it certainly *could* be done. There are a couple of things to consider:

1) Yes, you'd need 2 sets of panel rails per fabric panel. Each set has a top bar with clips that attach to the little GLIDE wheels; and a bottom flat bar that's just a weight (no wheel, no clips.) So you'd need TWO sets per panel in order to have 2 top bars with clips for wheels.

2) fabric panels don't really have the rigidity to work attached top & bottom. Rollers top and bottom is well established for rigid items: closet doors, cabinet doors - look at the sliding doors on the BESTA entertainment stuff for example.

If you want to use fabric panels, you'd probably need to build a wooden frame to keep the panel rigid enough to run on the two tracks.
Consider - fabric is flexible. If you pull the panel from the top roller rail, it will move with you first, and the bottom roller rail will lag. This will put torque on the fabric and eventually tear it out of one of the roller rails.
Fabric will also stretch/sag over time, so after time your taut curtain will start sagging at the bottom - *especially* if it's hemmed along the edges (the thread used in the hem stretches less than the body of the fabric, so the sides will stay original length, and the middle will bag).

If you build a lightweight wooden (or aluminum??) frame, then you could staple (or otherwise attach) your fabric panel, and the frame would provide the rigidity needed. ASSUMING you want your panels to move!!

If you don't want your panels to move, just act as a barrier, then use little clips or something on the bottom rail to attach the rail to the bannister.

[ BTW: fabric is "clamped" in the rails and then there are teensy little screws that go thru the outside metal and into the fabric to secure. ]

Rubrikgreen,

I appreciate your thorough and helpful answer. (I would want the panels to move, at least sometimes.) Thank you!
