Coffee Table Idea

I saw this beautiful table top this weekend @ IKEA in Stoughton and I'm thinking of trying it as a coffee table top, I just don't know what to put under it to support it.

I'm thinking at least four short shelves/boxes of some sort, but then I'll have to find some sort of something to sort of stick the glass to the base so it'll be fairly stable on top. I don't have kids, but have friends w/kids and the last thing I want is some little one leaning on one end of the top and having it flip up then it would probably break as it crashed back down and that would make me angry

:-)
the top measures 59x31" and 3/8" thick

Anybody make a successful coffee table from parts and pieces?? Oh, and the picture doesn't do it justice IMHO, it's all black but where the flowers are is see through, it's really quite pretty, again IMHO. It's on page 252 of the 2009 catalog being used as a desk top.

Re: Coffee Table Idea

The Vika Nykil was designed just for that very purpose. Upright, it's table height. Sideways, it's coffee-table height.

Re: Coffee Table Idea

That is a beautiful product. It is quite a bit larger than a standard coffee table, though...most are about 48" long. If you want to use IKEA parts, you could perhaps use the base from the Skiro and replace the glass with the top you like

or two small Lack tables, one at either end, with the top epoxied onto them (it isn't quite big enough for three in a row)

or build a frame similar to the Ivas

Narf & Diva, thank you for your quick and informative responses.

Narf: I didn't realize there was a frame for this, oh the things you miss while taking in other things :-)

Diva: All great ideas! Thank you. I was thinking of maybe four square, open on one side things, so I could use the base as storage, remotes, magazines, cats, puppies, etc. I've got the '09 catalog, so I'm digging thru there :-)
