I'm just about to jump in feet-first for my appliance purchases, and have fallen in love with a GE slide-in range that's in my budget. However, I noticed that the specs say that "Cabinets installed adjacent to slide-in ranges must have an adhesion spec of at least 194°F temperature rating." Anyone know if the Ikea base cabinets (birch finish) meet this? I know when I was looking at the Kraftmaid Venicia line (Holy Overpriced, Batman!) they sold plastic heat shield pieces that had to be installed on the sides of the cabinet doors next to ovens/ranges. Does Ikea require and/or sell this kind of thing, or are they "oven safe"?
I don't know if this will be any help, but I have a GE Profile Slide-In range between two cabinets. I put the cabinets right up against the range with no issues so far. I didn't put anything special between the cabinet doors or sides and the range. I Installed my range and cabinets in that part of the kitchen last November and have used the range multiple times per day ever since.
Before I installed the adjacent cabinets, I was using the range and just to test I touched the bare metal outside. It was warm to the touch but not hot at all.
I don't think the spec listed is for normal use. They probably wrote the spec to the temperatures achieved when the oven is in self-cleaning mode? And with air trapped between the cabinet and the stove I imagine it could get QUITE warm indeed during a self-cleaning cycle.
I'm not sure of the spec for IKEA Cabs, but I'm quite sure that thousands of slideins have been installed in IKEA kitchens. Do you need a cover panel of some sort? Not sure, but if I had to guess I'd say probably not? If you don't get an answer from an installer type here or someone that's doing it now, just ask your IKEAN when you're putting in your order, I'm sure it's a VERY common situation .

We too have a (BEAUTIFUL) brand-new GE slide-in range installed between IKEA cabinets (birch effect frames). No issues thus far.
I can't believe any line of cabinets would make you buy a shield to protect the cabs against something that cabinets would obviously tend to be exposed to (like heat from a stove). How idiotic (and yet, not so suprising...)
I agree w/ Tigger that that's probably a warning for the worst-possible case scenario... like if you left your oven on broil for 12 hours or something.
But all that said, I'd think that somewhere there must be info. that gives the IKEA cab "adhesion specs" or whatever the heck it is...
New to this forum and love it! We are renovating our kitchen and have decided on Ikea products. Great look at a great price - and I understand from my research that the quality is good as well. I have a concern though about wall ovens and the cabinets ability to withstand the heat generated during a self clean cycle. I have spoken to several companies about this as I am attracted to the high gloss thermofoil look (like abstrakt)and they have all said that thermofoil cabinets should have a protective heat shield otherwise they may melt. Any advise/experience?
One other question - we are installing hardwood floor, do we install cabs first and take floors to them or do we install floor first and place cabs on top, or....does it really matter (maybe for future if configuration were to change). Thx

As someone whose kitchen remodel involved changing someone else's floorplan, I'll just say it was a huge disappointment that the hardwood floors did not run all the way under the peninsula we removed. The PO skimped on hardwood and left a staggered gap of about 12-15" - probably saved about $50, but that meant I had to patch the floor.
I have no tech data on the heat issue, but my cabinets have been installed for about 15 months right next to an Aga cooker, which is too hot to touch all the time. No issues at all with the cabinet, although the spices I store in one of the cabinets probably are suffering a little from the warmth!

Makes sense to me to lay floor to the walls - alot easier too! As for the wall oven/cabinets heat issue I'm going to look into it a little more (I'll ask the Ikea people when I purchase the cabinets) but will probably use some sort of shield. I just don't want to risk it. It may just be a problem with the thermofoil. I have heard that the Venecia brand has had problems with high heat (self cleaning) and melting!!
We have recently purchased a 1980's West Coast Contemporary home which is lovely - lot's of glass, vaulted ceilings (cedar by the way so if anyone has suggestions on hardwood floor colour be my guest), forest setting - but a little dated...it has a red enamel sink!! We are slowly renovating and doing all the work ourselves and have started in the kitchen/dining room by blowing out three walls, rewiring/plumbing etc. As we progress I will try and get some pictures up. Thx for the input
