Hi there. We are finally getting there after a few weeks of stagnation!! We have ordered the cabinets and are getting the Abstrakt black doors custom made (as IKEA had discontinued them). The walls have been plastered and painted soft white..........and now we are trying to decide on the floor.
We found these lovely big porcelain tiles that look like leather or suede and are 2 feet square. I was drawn to the brown as they look so much like suede but we also have a pale version as well which would be lighter in the room I guess.
Got some poor photos below if any of you have any opinions.........I've done my best! Will also post a picture of roughly how we envisage the room looking - black base units and white wall units with oak worktop. The wall units may have white end panels or may end up with oak round them to match thecounter if it all looks a bit cold.
PS. It's a south facing room, about 10 ft by 12ft. It is fairly bright but this is England (!!) and so it's not bathed in sunshine all the time......we will also be having a breakfast bar in oak on the near wall but I didn't put that in as it would have confused matters and blocked the view. This will also add warmth and we will have a wood blind at the window and all the usual suspects as accessories.
Maybe it's just the way the brown color shows on my monitor, but I don't like the way it looks next to the wood floor it will be next to. If it looks OK in real life, I'd go for the brown, if not, the beige.
hi mollie: that's my nieces' name --very pretty name! I have a feeling that the brown is going to darken your room quite a bit. I like the beige. What if you did the perimeter of the kitchen in the brown and the rest in beige? You could even lay the brown tiles horizontally and the beige tiles on a diagonal. Or, you could do the opposite; beige around the perimeter and brown in the middle.
No question about it, the beige. You are doing wood worktops, correct? You need your horizontal surfaces to be more of a contrast to the verticals which are very dark, so I would absolutely choose the beige.
To be honest, I was trying to come up with something a little luxurious looking and warm which is what initially drew me to the brown......BUT, I agree the pale tile looks better in reality. And like most people, I am drawn to bright open spaces and don't like dark rooms.............so that's that then!
The only down side is that the pale one is currently unavailable in the large square size so we'll have to get 12 inch by 24 inch rectangular ones. But that's still not too small and we can step them to add some interest I guess.
Out of interest, anyone think any other particular colour of tile would suit the room. We did want pale terracotta (which would be a lot warmer) but you can't get terracotta in a large size. Too many small tiles are too fussy.
Hi Mollie--Congratulations! Looks like you'll be getting started really soon. It's too bad you are in England, because just a few weeks ago I returned the Abstrakt Black doors and replaced them with Abstrakt White. I like the layout...looks quite functional and lovely (though where's the fridge?) Regarding the tiles, I think I'm with the others in thinking that the brown tile would darken the kitchen more than you would like. (Shame, though, it's a lovely tile.) I like the idea of slab tiles 12 x 24--your contractor could lay them out in a bricklike pattern which would give it some nice interest. Have you considered a tile that is more gray/silver (though light, shading to white), since it seems as though you have the aluminum /glass cabs as your uppers. That might be nice contrast and tie everything together very nicely. My design has evolved in that I'm only having less black han I thought initially.
