I am now in need of help in the paint section. I am telling my husband that we need to remove the popcorn , use a color to pain the walls and put crown and base mouldings. He says crown moldings are not the in thing nowadays and nobody does it. is it true?
Then should i just do the base moulding and leave it. How will either of them look with an ikea kitchen. The mouldings are for my dining and living. We will be buying crown moulding separately for the cabinets thru our contractor. Not sure how that will look either.
Thanks and looking forward to your input. I will be basing my conclusions from your suggestions.
IKEA sells a strip of moulding that is rather interesting. In one profile, it fits along the top of your cabinets, flip it around a bit & it runs underneath your cabinets to hide lights and whatnot.
I use it & am quite happy with it. Its not ornate, but IKEA is not ornate anyways. Its easy to install & matches the cabinets quite nicely.
The catalog doesnt seem to feature it much along the top, but it is in most pictures as running along the bottom of the cabinets - its all the same piece...
I think the crown molding is never in or out, it just depends on what style the rest of your house is. I think the only time that it's a bad idea is if you're doing a really modern room. It might also be too much if you have a lot going on in the room.
Your husband is totally wrong, crown molding is totally in...but like the other poster said, it depends on the look you're going for...if you want modern...definitely don't do, but like me, I like the traditional/transitional look. I am going to be installing crown molding in all my rooms. But I like that look.
we plan to use crown moulding in our Adel MB kitchen. i saw it used in a kitchen with soffits (as ours has) and i really liked it...all depends on what look you want.

Reason: add photo
cali-
came across this photo from another member's gallery, they layered the adel MB ikean crown for the cabinets to give it some dimension...just thought you might be interested as you mentioned you were planning on purchasing from your contractor.

Thanks for this tip. I also will be installing Adel MB. Thanks again.
Has anyone seen crown molding go from the top of the cab's right through onto to the wall and ceiling?
Installing the cabs all the way to the ceiling (or close to it) and a vertical flat piece and crown - which in theory should line up with where the crown would naturally meet the ceiling. What if that continues right onto the wall past the cabinet?
I have been searching kitchen photos for about an hour now and only see crown ending at the cabinets?
What do you think? Have you seen it before?
Do you have a photo?
Hope you can understand what it is I am asking - it reads about as clear as mud!
Thanks
