I'm thisclose to deciding to go with the Nexus BB for my kitchen, but I wanted to ask you guys about flooring. My first floor is quite small -- an open kitchen, living room and dining room. The furniture is black leather, the dining room table is brown granite, and we have a white shag rug. I was thinking of choosing a light horizontal bamboo for the flooring in the living room and dining room, with slate in the entry and kitchen. Do you think a multi-colored slate would work with the Nexus BB in the kitchen? I'm looking for a cool, modern kitchen with small quirkiness. The countertops are going to be cream or white marble-ish (possibly 3form alabaster), any wall cabs are going to be Adel or Abstrakt white (but there are few wall cabs).
I'd continue the bamboo right into the kitchen. Besides making the space seem more continuous, which is the primary beauty of the open plan, it will contrast beautifully with all the darker elements and tie everything together.
I think slate would be way too dark. Limestone would be a better option IMHO.
i agree with using one flooring. i have nexus bb in my media alcove and medium/light bamboo running in the entire area (family room, nook, kitchen), and it looks gorgeous together, i even have the sides of the boxes peeking out and love that contrast.
without knowing your space i couldn't say if it's too small for 2 different types, but i do like the idea of slate with the nexus. as long as you have A LOT of light in there cause it's a very dark combo.
I have light maple flooring with the goldish multi colored slate in spot areas such as hearth and entrances. The slate has so many colors to pick up on. Reds, Oranges, yellows and neutrals.
Keeping the maple flooring throughout the home, with spots of the slate, have tied together rooms that are otherwise very different.
I think the light bamboo would look great with the Nexus BB, and use the slate as accent.
We're almost finished our Nexus BB kitchen and we were also planning to use a light bamboo floor with a light porcelain tile in the kitchen. However, with 3 small kids and a dog we really needed to use the strand-woven bamboo fordurabilityand it was just too orangy/honey a color for us. In the end we scrapped the idea of using tile(although it would have been beautiful) and bamboo and went with rift and quartered white oak throughout the living/dining/kitchen area. We used a water based finish on itso as not to add the amber tones ofthe oil based finishes. It looks fabulous with the Nexus BB and it's turned out to be an extremely practical choice for us. We do have the tile in the laundry room right next to the kitchen and, if we'd gone with that in the kitchen, I think it would have looked great too.
I considered slate at one point but decided it was too dark a look for my kitchen. We have light cream counters so it would not have worked for us.
Pictures, anyone? Everything you're saying sounds so wonderful...
I like the idea of a multi-colored slate for the entry, then bamboo throughout. A white shag rug on bamboo might be a little to pale, but it might also be lovely texture. Hmmm.
The space is about 25'x25' for the first floor, plus the entry.
I am very fond of the dark floors/dark woodwork/light countertop combo, and love slate (planning on it in my own kitchen- the same that you see here in the entry). Its been very easy to care for, and you couldn't ask for a more slip-free surface that holds up to kids and dogs and winter in Minnesota.
Sounds like you are going 1/2 dark, 1/2 light- that could be great. Do you have any photos of the current area or drawings so we can see how they would flow together?
I really believe in a common thread pulling the whole together- in our case, the dark carpet and the oak are picked up in the slate- which allowed me to keep the existing oak woodwork and not stain it ebony (which I may still do). Keeping the floors dark- but not the same material-in the main living areas ties it all together; and the copper/brown flecks in the slate pick up the wood.
I can't believe how helpful this website and all of you are. It makes such a difference to see what I'm envisioning in someone else's kitchen first. I loooove what you did in your kitchen, and I was laughing when I read your blog, because I've been considering one of the botanical 3-form backsplashes also. I'm thinking a sheet of stainless behind the range, with the thatch on either side. Or, honestly, if I can find a botanical I like in the reclaim section of the website, I'd go with what I could get for a good price.
Anyway, I think I'm convinced to do the light horizontal bamboo in the kitchen as well as in the living room and dining room, and to do a colorful slate just in the entry. We're still in the drawing phase with our architect (putting a mastersuite on our split-level, turning and expanding the garage, adding an entry room), but I'm trying to nail down as much as possible before we put it out to bid.
