Those look sharp, and I have definitely seen that here and there when I was doing residential construction (home theater guy), but we are leaning towards more modern designs. Beadboard is out for this house, it wouldn't really fit in with the overall scheme.
Although alternating beadboard and plywood squares OR beadboard squares in alternating directions could be very interesting, even in a modern aesthetic.
I have no examples. Wanted to say that I would do a mockup too - I ask dh to do that all the time, when we are going "off roading" with an idea for the house!
While I've never seen plywood like you want to do it, and on a ceiling, I have seen a neat look with OSB. There is a trendy clothes shop in our local trendy mall, and for wainscoating, they used OSB (you know the kind of chopped up pattern look it has?) and a chair rail above it. It looked so cool and right in their design that I looked for a place to use it in my house, and still may end up finding an application. I just couldn't believe I loved how this OSB pattern looked. Anyway, good luck and I will check this thread to see if you end up doing it, might get another idea for us
A brief update. We have decided to try an experiment with HardiBoard. Although nobody stocks it in michigan, we special ordered it at Lowes for about $30 per 4X8 sheet. We are going to coat 3X3 squares in enamel paint, and put them up almost like giant ceramic tiles in a basement bathroom that has plumbing above it. I didn't want to seal it up permanently in case I need to access that part of the ceiling for plumbing repair or HVAC vent removal, etc. Our house is a constantly changing thing!
I am going to use stainless fasteners, screwed right into the joists. This bathroom has had an open ceiling since it was installed, in the fifties, and everything has held up so far. I don't think that adding a celing will effect it any, plus it hardly gets used. We will probably keep the gaps small, and caulk them.
In the dining room, I still plan on using wood squares, but I think I might start with some inexpensive MDF, and paint them. Today it is rain/snowing, so unfortunatly, I will not be able to cut any. My workshop is my driveway. What a drag.
