Fun New Years Day Exercise OR: Please help me again!
We're working on uploading all the existing photos from the Fansite into the new database, and one of the pieces of information that we're trying to capture is the "style" of the doors/rooms/whatever. In this particular case, we're trying to pick the style(s) that apply to the doorstyles - I know that I'm coloring this with my own perspective, and would like to gain some other points of view.
So, once again...I solicit your assistance.
If you have a few minutes, copy these lists and then put the doorstyles that you'd consider that style next to the style or in a column underneath...whatever works - it might be easier to do this in Word or another program. It is expected that most doorstyles will fit in to one or more categories, and that a couple of the categories may not be applicable in this particular category (i.e. Universal Design probably won't have a particular doorstyle associated with it, but when we assign finished kitchens to categories, then it will get its day in the sun). Also, if you think of other categories that should be part of the list, let me know!

You may want to put discontinued next to Abstrakt Black and Kvadrat. I never hear about the Duvbo and Ramdala. Are they still being made? Not sure that anyone could use IKEA to do an Old World kitchen, but there's another category (unless it could be linked with traditional).
I actually do have them listed as discontinued...well, Abstrakt Black anyway. I don't think Ramdala's officially discontinued yet, although it is on the chopping block. I might put disc. for 07-08 or something like that.
I thought about Mediterranean or Tuscan, but then had the same thoughts as you...how would you do that? Maybe with Liljestad? Fagerland? I suppose it couldn't hurt to add the category.
Does anyone have a few minutes to help with this? I feel like I'm all over the place when uploading pictures and would like to categorize them in ways that are useful and meaningful to folks who are searching...

Susan: I have some time ... but don't think I have the knowledge ... I'm really bad about knowing what category a particular design/kitchen falls into ... I only know whether they are attractive to me ... so I don't think I'd be much help... I don't even know what category I'd put my own kictchen into....

Maybe it's too daunting a task? I'll put together my list and see if anyone wants to blow me out of the water. Maybe that would be more fun.

I'd been doing this for our housemates (she knows what she likes, but has no idea about design theory, so when I said A&C, she thought I meant 70's macrame, and started to panic...) so here are my notes and how I would use the different door styles.
As an aside, I think that an Old World kitchen can be done (using either Ulriksdal or Liljestad) with some caveats, like using really good countertops and backsplashes, adding architectural details like appropriate cornices and mouldings, and using the one big unifying feature of a range hood with exterior interest. IKEA's range hoods would not work. It would take a talented designer; however, were I trying to do an Old World or High Gothic vicky kitchen (shudder... icky), I'd probably have the doors done local custom, or take the Arlig doors and embellish with decorative wood trim and paint. (The textured, paintable wall and ceiling paper that lowes carries -- some looks like tin ceiling - does glue to melamine just fine, and with trim, paint and that paper, you can do almost anything to an Arlig door....)
If I haven't seen it in at least a photo, I didn't comment. Since I put several styles on each door name, the ones closest to the door name are the ones I'd use first, so with Abstrakt Black, I'd be most likely to use it in a High Mod kitchen, then an Asian, then Eclectic, then Pro-Style, then Contemporary.

Thank you for taking the time to do this! Fantastic. I can't thank you enough...
Let me just clarify because I've had questions and concerns from folks about the number of categories. These classifications will be used for the purposes of providing a means for searches - photos/kitchens are not going into sectioned off boxes - the data will be used in a database. I'll use jackww's kitchen as an example of how it will work: if you searched for "modern white abstrakt kitchens" you would pull up his kitchen (among others) the same as if you searched on "contemporary with stainless backsplash". His kitchen would fall into both style classifications. These are fields for the database so that the info is accessible in as many ways as possible ~ because different people search in different ways.
Each photo/kitchen also has elements that are listed in the description of the photo/kitchen and these will be searchable as well. So, if you wanted to find stainless backsplashes, you could search on stainless backsplash and get multiple kitchens in many styles with stainless backsplashes. Make sense?
It just occured to me that I need to add a custom/non-ikea category to put to kitchens like Jill77's, kellybmw's, LizH's and Mariposita's (when she shows us some!), as well as for innovative applications like your suggestions for Victorian/Gothic or Old World.
Thanks again! Still taking any and all suggestions...
Ever hopeful,
Susan

The interpretations can be so challenging, and the styles so affected by what else is going on in the kitchen. We're going for a contemporary look, and are using the Adel MB, which in the above categories really does not fall under contemporary...but with the addition of stainless backsplash, black granite, etc. can become so...
That's actually the problem that I've had too in trying to enter some of the multitude of images on the fansite side. Well that, and maybe just a *bit* of my aversion to decorating terminology and some of the principles and... Heh. Lets just say I'm interior decorating challenged.
I do think it's important to keep in mind that it's the totality of the kitchen and all it's parts that makes up a style, not any one or two elements. I think the intent behind what Susan's doing in this thread to to come up with a list that will help *suggest* possible styles based on one of the bigger determining elements, the cabinet doors. The other *REALLY* important thing to bear in mind once the new system is rolled out, is that you can select as many styles as you think are applicable. The majority of pictures I've put in have 2 or 3 different ones selected, as it's often a really subjective thing, and we're trying to set it up so people can find what they're looking for even if they don't know exactly what that is.
Anyway, not sure if that's clarified anything or just muddied the waters even more ::shrug::...
James
