Question Painting hardware?

Is it possible to spray paint hardware? Has anyone done this before?

I would like to go with all black hardware but I don't want to pay the price for them. I would like to go as cheap as possible. I was wondering if anyone has attempted this and how did they turn out? Is the finish tough, or does the paint chip off after awhile?

Thanks,
Chrissy

Which hardware?

Are you talking about the hinges/drawer rails etc? The hinges are only visible when the doors are open, unlike on most frame face cabinets where you see them all the time. Not sure if that bears on your desire for black hardware at all, but thought it worth mentioning.

As for painting them... Hrrm. I'd imagine that most paints would indeed chip off fairly easily, there's not much for the paint to adhere to on the hinges. So you'd likely have to start with a primer coat specifically designed to adhere to the metal first, and then follow that up with a couple color coats. It'd help reduce the coats if your primer is black to begin with. Inerestingly, I think we used a black primer from Benjamin Moore when we did our kitchen island... If you decide definitively to go with painting hinges etc, let me know and I'll see if we have any left. I *know* we have lots of spare AKURUM hinges from the AS IS room, I could brush some of the primer on and see how it works. I know our Benjamin Moore store will put just about any paint you would like in a spray can for you, so that might be an option.

I've done it. You need to use a good primer first, then spray, let dry, respray for three coats or so. You'll probably have wear but the primer and multiple coats should help it last a bit longer.

You could always have them powdercoated at a company that does that if you want really long lasting results.

I'm sorry for not clarifying myself better. I was referring to the knobs and handles.

Thanks,
Chrissy

Yes.

I'd suggest doing what they have already suggested for the hinges. The goal is to make the paint stick. Primer or a good sanding should do the trick.

Luckily the hardware is so dang cheap that you can get an extra set and practice 1st.
