I was planning on using paperstone for my countertops. but the price was
quite high. I really don't want a laminate countertop. I was thinking about a wood countertop that was stained a dark black./brown. Does anybody have any resources? My internet search has yielded me nothing. FYI I live in Alexandria, VA, if that helps.
What is your price range and why is it that you don't want laminate? I'm thinking that a granite tile countertop would be a great option for you, especially if you can DIY a bit.
I need to purchase approximately 51 square feet of countertop. I was hoping to purchase the countertop for approximately $1500. Personally, I don't like the look of granite. I plan on using abstrakt white base cabinets (no uppers). I love the black paperstone (www.kliptech.com); however, the price will run me about $3000 (that price includes install).
I'm not opposed to laminate, but I was trying to think of an alternative, preferably green, counter product that would still give me the modern look I'm going for. Hence, my search for dark brown/almost black wood countertop.
Shetkastone has some nice dark countertops -- both brown and black -- and it's paper composite like paperstone. Not sure of the prices near you, but it's seems like it costs less than paperstone in my area. www.shetkastone.com
For what it's worth, Formica laminate is Greengaurd-certified and can result in LEED credits if installed with low-VOC adhesives. Formica's high pressure lamintes are made of an average 20% of postindustrial recycled content. I can't tell from their website which are the high pressure laminates, though.
I'm trying to go green, too, which I was I chose Ikea for cabinets. Good luck!

Basically all of what you think of as Formica is HPL or high pressure laminate. Low pressure laminate is the plastic facing of things like melamine or laminated particle board. So generally speaking any laminate countertop is going to be HPL - regardless of manufacturer.
Thanks, that's good info. So that means Formica's laminate has some postindustrial recycled content. Not a ton, but better than nothing.
I agree completely! One thing to be aware of in addition to the laminate and the adhesives is the particle board substrate. There is a wide variety of different enviornmentaly friendly levels depending on the board used. Here VT Industries Fine Laminate Countertops: Caring For Your Fine Laminate Countertop
is a good example of laminate countertops done good. There are plenty of examples of the opposite out there.
