I stumbled this forum while trying to decide on colour scheme for my apartment
It is a small open plan apartment. Planning to remodel kitchen door cabinet and change the existing flooring
What I have now : Black granite countertop (and it has to stay)
Stainless steel fridge
Dark chocolate sofa
Dark brown entertainment unit
Mocha dining chair with grey dining table
My remodel plan:
Flooring: white oak or natural colour bamboo
Base kitchen cabinet: white
Countertop: black granite
Wall cabinet Nexus brown black
Will this colour combination work? I read somewhere in this forum it is advisable to balance the horizontal and vertical (eg light flooring, light countertop, dark cabinet)
My decorating style is very much modern minimalist
I am open to any other colour scheme which you think will work with my existing furniture and countertop
I wouldn't count on Nexus brown black. I haven't been paying close attention to the discussion about it here, but It's not available right now and as I understand it, there's no sure date, if ever, that it will be...
Anyway, I think it sounds like you've got some nice looking and neutral major elements there that would allow you do do most anything with door style/color.
I personally do not like the look of two completely different doorstyles on the uppers vs. the lowers, particularly in smaller spaces. If you are set on this, I would figure out a way to combine the two so that you have the lower doorstyle referenced in the uppers and vice versa. Likewise, if you are set on that combination of doors, I would consider putting the darker color on the bases and the lighter above, as having a band of dark color up high like that could have a tendency to make the room look smaller or hemmed in.
Do you like the AVSKIT frosted glass/aluminium?
Can you post some pictures of your kitchen as it is now so we can get an idea of the space?
what i plan to do: add tall pantry cabinet
add horizontal wall cabinet on top of the fridge
and another wall cabinet for my microwave so i have more benchspace
Would be grateful if you could comment about the kitchen layout
Actualy I havent made up my mind about the colour for the kitchen cabinet. I love nexus brown black because of the warmness of the colour. I just feel that white is too cold.
Any suggestion whether i should go for light colour wood or dark colour wood for flooring?
Hopefully our resident layout specialist Eva will get here and help with the layout.
As far as basic use of space goes, I think I would try to fit cabinets all the way to the ceiling on the entire range/fridge wall.
How high is the ceiling?
Would moving the fridge be a possibility?
Am I correct to assume you would like to keep the kitchen confined to the existing footprint?
I like what you've done in the planner with the wall cabinets to the left of the sink. Is that where you plan to put your microwave? Could you get an over the range micro/hood? Again, I would consider configuring the cabinets so that you've got storage all the way to the ceiling.
I would also like to see the wallspace of the back wall used more efficiently, maybe with a band of cabinets up high or shelves or something. You could really cram a lot more storage in just by taking advantage of that wall.
As far as flooring goes, I think either dark or light, as long it's consistent with whatever you choose for the living area.
Were you planning to redo the whole space or just the kitchen?
I think having one type of flooring throughout would help the space feel larger, and I guess I'd lean towards light colored not knowing what kind of daylight you get. I would also be tempted to keep the cabinetry and flooring very similar in shade for the same reason, at least on the base cabinets.
On the other hand, dark floors and dark bases would be very sleek and sexy...
For the uppers, I think I would really like to see the Avskit frosted glass/aluminium with one or two of whatever other doorstyle you choose. When lit from the inside, I think it would make the room seem larger and make for a nice focal point when viewed from your livingroom.
I can't use the planner because I run Linux but like I said, hopefully Eva will chime in here. She's the best!
Can I ask you the brand of the appliances? Is the fridge LG? I'm having a hard time finding nice looking appartment size cooktops, ovens and fridges .
Thanks

Hi Billie The fridge is Samsung (it is upside down fridge) It is great fridge but Samsung customer service is really crappy.
Hi Splatgirl Thanks for replying. Yes i intend to change the flooring for whole space (
ie
the living room and kitchen). Gotta keep the furniture. So the new flooring and kitchen must work with the existing furniture. Ceiling is 2.5 metres and existing kitchen cabinet is 2.25 metres high and I do want to keep the kitchen to existing footprint. Went looking for flooring yesterday and kinda like these floorboard http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...bum/jarrah.jpghttp://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...3460-natur.jpg The reason why I want dark colour cabinet is because I like the warmness of wood and kinda sick of keeping the existing white cabinet clean I am torn between this two options: Option 1: Keep white as kitchen cabinet colour scheme and add on few glass/aluminium door cabinet for the wall cabinet Option 2: change base cabinet to wood cabinet and add few glass/aluminum door cabinet for wall cabinet and wood cabinet. Kinda worry that option 2 can be too dark for my existing room ( dark floor, dark cabinet, dark benchtop) . In regard to your question, I think i can move the fridge to the left side of the cabinet (gotta ask electrician to install new power point) re the sunlight, the room receives the afternoon sun. Kinda bright too in the morning And yes i am planning to put the microwave on the cabinet to the left of the sink. I will play around with the planner and post it later.
Hi! I am looking forward to seeing what you've got in the planner. In the meantime, I wanted to chime in on the cabinet choices.
I think the bamboo/light floor, white cabinets (I'd love to see Abstrakt White) and black granite countertop would be a nice, fresh look. I don't think the wall cabs in Nexus BB would be the best choice. If you want to go with dark cabinets, go with dark base cabinets and a white countertop, with white cabinets or frosted glass/aluminum Avsikts above. i've seen some fantastic things done with cover panels as complete surrounds for a row of wall cabinets, and you could also play around with the door sizes to get a different type of look. I'm particularly fond of the 30x15 cabs stacked or at least using four 15x15 doors. Using wood countertops in a dark tone opens up some other design options; the wraparound three sided countertop look is hot right now, where you have the countertop and then a full panel of countertop going to the floor on each side of a cabinet run.
I am a big fan of the countertop and flooring planes being of a similar intensity, not necessarily color, although I broke that rule in my own home and it's fine. I have light oak parquet floors with Nexus birch cabinets and black granite countertop. The reason I did this is to make the countertop the star of the room, which it certainly is. For a minimalist look, though, you would not want anything to stand out by itself but rather have the form of the whole thing be the star.
