Help me with tile choice :(

OK, starting construction on a country colonial and have decided so far that we LOVE Adel birch cabinets and are all but sold on Ash flooring due to its stability going over our radiant heat and its look. It has the grain of oak and the color variation of hickory at less cost then both. We are now trying to pick our kitchen and entry way tile (will be the same for asthetics) that will border the cabinets and the hardwood in the kitchen and the hardwood in the foyer.

Here is a example of the flooring:

And here was the tile we were looking at:

We are going with a light leather brown for the wall color in the kitchen with the Adel Birch cabinets and a rye (brownish yellow) in the entryway.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for tile colors? I love highly variable tile colors and am not 100% sold on Adel Birch, I also love medium brown but it does not look as good with the brown wall color we love.

Anyone?

- Kuli

Re: Help me with tile choice :(

Kuli,
Is that Daltile French Quarter Bourbon Street? I love that tile and the Cobblestone color that is darker with more variation. I'm using Cobblestone in my kitchen and family room and Bourbon Street in the master bath. With Tidaholm for the cabinets, the color should look good - I hope.

You might want to look at Cobblestone - in the variation for it, there is a brownish-yellow, and an olive green along with browns, blues, greys and red. There are some good pictures of it showing the variation and use for floor, counters, and backsplash in this thread from the John Bridge Ceramic Tile Forum: The Big Island and Countertops project

That is a forum for professional tile guys so there is a lot of discussion about how to do installations correctly. But there are also a lot of pictures of really good tile (and stone) work. For inspiration pictures, go to Pic of your craziest custom tile design? The pros show off their best work there and some of it is spectacular!

Re: Help me with tile choice :(

Hehe, my edit to the above post was to put in the bourbon street, I originally had cobblestone

Looking at that thread I realize that I LOVE that tile!!! I will have the Adel birch cabinets, light/medium brown walls, the bourbon street or cobblestone tiles and a light/dark brown granite countertop to bring it all together.

Here is the counter I was thinking:

LOL! I went back and forth about the Cobblestone/Bourbon Street, too. That's why I decided to spit the difference and use one in the kitchen/family room and one in the master bath.

I am absolutely the wrong person to ask about granite - I am just not a fan of it.

For my counters (unless the tile guy changes my mind) I am planning to use American Olean Zenith. That is a rectified porcelain tile that comes in blue (my favorite color) and in 24x24" tiles. Since it is rectified, the grout lines can be minimal.
Here is what it looks like:

Right now my color for the walls is SW Vast Sky, but I only picked up samples yesterday and need to see how swatches look in the house. I'm also going to have some open wood shelves stained SW Provence Blue and the toe kicks will be stained Minwax Navy Blue.

But that is beauty of a tile like Cobblestone - it will go with almost any color pallette!
