Question Looking for a king bed frame

I currently have a king size bed (metal box spring frame, box springs, and mattress) and I would like to get a nice wood (or wood look) headboard, footboard, and side rails. I really like IKEA's malm in medium brown, but am I correct in the assumption that this is made for just a mattress, not a box spring and mattress set? Does IKEA make a bed frame in King size that supports both a box spring set and the mattress, and if not how would my nights sleep change going from a box spring set to just the mattress? Go easy on me, its my first post. Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

Welcome.

You can use an Ikea bed frame with a box spring, and in such a case, can omit the slats (though you will still need the Hamar center beam). However, depending on the heights of the mattress and box spring, one may find that such makes the bed overly tall and out of proportion to the bedframe.

You can omit the boxspring for some bed slats. Depending on how firm/soft the original box spring is, you might feel no difference to a firmer feeling from the slats.

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

Narf, thanks for a quick reply. Ok I measured my boxspring and mattress and together they are 17 inches high. The footboard is only 11 3/4 inches, so I would assume it will look bad if it is that much higher. Alright so I guess the only choice if I go the malm route is to use just the mattress with bed slates.

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

You could just plop the boxspring on the floor and have the bedframe around it. Then it wouldn't look like it's popped up that much.

To conceal the sides, you could do something like this:

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

yeah thats a possibility, probably better off just not using the box springs, I have a Sealy Posturepedic mattress so it should be comfortable without the box springs.

Anyone know of any nice looking wood bed frames out there besides IKEA that aren't an arm and a leg?

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

If you don't mind used bedframes, there's always a random assortment on Craigslist, priced anywhere between 0 and $$$$.

Re: Looking for a king bed frame

Thanks for the suggestions, I did look on craigslist and didn't find anything I liked. Had never heard of west elm, they have some nice ones too, now I have a tough decision to make. Thanks again for all your help.
