Our adel birch kitchen is installed (and 90% done!), so now it's on to the painting. The wife and I thought a light tan would look good, but we're having trouble due to the cabinet color. By the cabinets, the color looks very white/plain, while on an opposite wall with white wainscoting (which will be removed), it looks pretty good. My window trim is all stained pine in a light/medium value (nothing like the adel birch), and some will be going to a white/off white (yea, it's sacrilege to paint stained woodwork, but it's crappy stained pine that was never a quality job), and I think this will help bring out the tan color (it's actually Behr Sandstone Cove).
The kitchen was a pale yellow that just looked awful with the Adel Birch. We then tried a medium value tan that we love in our laundry room (that has white Ikea cabints and trim), and it looked yellowish/ugly next to the Adel Birch.
I suggested to my wife that we may need to venture into another color realm - which is fine, but I do get tired of buying paint, putting in on, and then going in yet another direction. What wall color have others with Adel Birch gone to?

I'm lovin' green kitchens lately. Green and woodtones go together so naturally, like trees. Gray-greens, olive greens, sage greens, bright apple greens, pale celery greens, ... there so many shades that go with so many styles. Maybe there's something in the green family that will inspire you.

Tans are tricky...almost as tricky as white. They'll look different depending on what is around them and what their undertones are. Did you know that tans and beiges are actually part of the orange family and can have undertones of pink, blue or green? That's why they are tricky. Grays are almost as bad.
Birch will make anything with a yellow tone get yellower. Grays will make birch look yellower, just to be contrary. If you want a contrast instead of intensifying the yellow, you'll need to go with a cool tone, in the blue or green family. You can go with a beige, gray or white if it has a cool undertone, but it won't be exciting at all.
My own kitchen is Nexus Birch and we have black countertops with a retro aqua wall color called Balmy Skies. It's a cool blue-green, not too blue and not too green. Here's a pic so you can see how they play together.

Sigh. We're doing Adel Birch too (our test door is sitting on the DR table as I type, surrounded by paint chips) and I agree its a tricky color wood-- it appears to be too yellow to be paired with anything that also has a lot of yellow in it, but it seems to go nicely with brighter colors like red, green and even blue. (have you checked the galleries on this site and the fkb?)
I'm favoring a light grassy green, DH prefers an orangey apricot color. Or maybe we'll do both, if we end up going the 'romper room' route.
Maybe you can take some color guidance from your floor/backsplash?

Not sure if you have access to a friend with photoshop or corel painter, but take a picture and have them hue slide the wall color around to see if anything stands out - Some want the wall to be an extension of the cabinets (like making them tan with birch cabinets) while others are looking for the wall to help "pop" the countertops and cabinets (like red walls with black/brown cabinets). It's really which you like and how comfortable you are with "loud" colors.

The easy answer to what colour paint goes with adel birch and black is almost anything you want (except maybe tan and yellow). Both the birch and black are quite cool tones, so you could warm it up. For example, you could go with a deep rich Sun-dried tomato red - it would be stunning. Or a burnt orange.
Or you could go for a cool tranquil colour like depression glass green or torquoise like Eva.

Zeuss ... I think that would absolutely look fantastic as a backsplash for a birch kitchen w/ black countertops ... lovely... lovely!!

It would look AWESOME with that tile- in fact, you could use just about any color mentioned in this thread- from Eva's tranquility to all kinds of orange!
I second the vote to use the super cool professional color combinations from mosaic tile sites to get some ideas...some people are just good at this stuff!!
