Let me preface by saying that my
dh
is in fact dear. He is lovely really, but choosing the paint color for the kitchen may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Let me vent for a moment, so that I can return to a more loving place with him
So we have the Ulriksdal cabinets with the gray laminate countertop. We have no colors chosen for anything else at this point....we are recovering a couch and two chairs to go into the connected family room, we will be making cushions for the church pew eating area. But no colors have been chosen yet. I have yet to feel moved in any one direction yet...as I am in overloaded mode with all these choices.
The livingroom is already a leaf green, the study will be painted yellow.... He wants to steal my perfect Hawthorne yellow for the kitchen. He wants me to rechoose a color for my study.....
I want to paint the whole darn thing a lovely warm Ivory, and repaint later when the colors come to me....he still wants my yellow.
In the midst of all this, my lovely 4 year son piped in that what it really needs is one wall each of black, green, blue and red . My 7 yo would like pink...yeah right!!!
I truly want my marriage to survive this...but paint may be what does us in
LOL

DH definition
DH usually means Dear Husband (or, pick your own adjective starting with D).
Never mind that the studio already has dibs on the yellow--do YOU like it in the kitchen? If so, why can't they share? I'm sure the paint store would be happy to sell you an extra gallon or two
Yellow with wood can be tricky...I'd paint a board with the yellow and place it up against a door or something in different lights at different times of day. You might be shocked at the effect! If you like it, there's no reason you can't go with it for the kitchen, yellow is a happy color and it's great in a kitchen. Unless you have a need for each room to be different, having a color you love in the kitchen as well as your study would be nice.
If you don't like what it does to the wood, though, then I'd recommend you start looking at cooler shades, those with blue undertones, rather than warmer shades with yellow undertones.
Will the connected family room be the same color as the kitchen? I like green kitchens, personally. Orangey reds like terracotta or rust are beautiful too. Color is so personal. Be sure to test swatches next to the Ulrik cabinets and next to the pew seating to see how different colors play with those wood tones. If all else fails, post a poll here and let IKEAfans decide for you!
I was thinking terracotta/clay too. Of course, this is also dependent on what the flooring is and whether it complements, or offers a contrast. That's a determining factor on whether to stick with earthy tones or not.

I must say, I love Hawthorne Yellow by BM - it is gorgeous!
But I've had the same trouble with my hubby for my 21 years of marriage. But I've finally found the solution. I'm 3/4 finished my Interior Design degree that we've paid $38,000 for. Now when I make design decisions, he totally trusts me! Of course, it isn't a solution that would work for everybody!!
But seriously - it is only paint! Try something daring - go for it. You can have such fun putting together a design board. What I suggest is get some inspiration from somewhere. Maybe a backsplash tile that you just LOVE or fabric for the window treatments or furniture your recovering. Or even an accent pillow or a piece of art. Once you find your inspiration, go down to your Benjamin Moore store and get some help from the owner or manager (or someone who knows their stuff). They'll help you find some great colours. There are so many amazing colours to choose from that it is a shame to play it too safe. And in a kitchen, you don't see that much of the wall colour so you can be more daring that usual.
And tell you hubby that it's only paint - it can be changed. Or tell him the "expert" at the paint store suggested it. My Benjamin Moore store does in home consultations. They do an amazing job, I've seen some of their work. It costs a fee, but not too much and they can do the whole house while they're there. A neutral 3rd party might be the answer to family strife!
And whatever you do - don't try to wallpaper with a reluctant spouse. It is a guarenteed trip to divorce court!!!!
Last night I made the decision for him while he was out with friends. I painted the whole darn thing Hepplewhite Ivory ***a surprisingly easy painting job...but then the kids were asleep and the painting supervisor was away***.
As we have not chosen anything yet in the way of fabric, curtains, anything...I will do the crazy color painting later. I am sure that once all the other stuff has been gotten and installed, the room color will come to me.
I start back teaching on Tuesday and need to have my brain cells focused on the best way to teach English to my new crop of ESL 7th graders, not whether Castelton Green is a good color
LOL
. So it is done and we can move everything in.
