We are in the final stages of finalizing our kitchen design. We've bounced around a lot, but fell in love with the NEXUS BROWN BLACK cabinets.
We really want to purchase these cabinets, but we have one last hump to get over. We also have dark floors. The flooring is actually a maple hardwood with a "mocha" colour. It's kind of like a chocolate colour.
I attached a couple of images of the kitchen plan (any comments there would be appreciated as well) along with a couple of conceptual 3D views.
I have been searching relentlessly on the web to find an some info on dark cabinets with dark flooring, but not much luck. I did find one picture though that shows a dark cabinet kitchen with dark flooring. It looks nice to me, but they also have some glass door cabinets which help "lighten" the mood.
Here are a couple of things we plan to do to help "lighten" the mood for our kitchen,
1. Some pot lights, undercabinet lighting, down lighting over the island
2. Use a very light countertop (granite)
3. Maybe even continue the countertop material on the 2 end sides of the island (not shown in pics).
Re: Nexus Brown Black Cabs and Dark Flooring - ok?
I have very dark oak floors, love the NBB, but thought they were too dark with my floors. But, if I were to do it, I would do very light (white or ivory) counters. I don't think you can get granite light enough for that effect (even "white" granite has quite a bit of pattern to it and is not really white. I also would only do it if the layout permitted keeping the upper cabs light -- using glass, and perhaps some open shelving rather than a number of tall dark cabs. In other words, I would keep the walls light and want to see more wall than upper cab.
I would buy a NBB door and bring it home to see how it looks with your floor.

Hi,
I would also try the stainless steel legs instead of the toekick to break up all the dark wood. There is a granite called Aquamarina...which is primarily white...we are using it with the nexus bb...will let you know how it turns out.

Using the "stainless" toekick might also help -- but I agree that it would be fine especially if the countertops and wall cabs were lighter.
If you have to order a NBB door, try to grab a Takta handle in the black brown just to put next to your floor. It won't be the same effect, but it will let you know a bit about the colors next to each other.
Re: Nexus Brown Black Cabs and Dark Flooring - ok?
Personally I think it will be a little too much dark in the room. I think a contrast between the floor and the cabinets usually looks best. It gives a visual distinction between the horizontal and vertical surfaces. As Priya said above, you might be able to help this with the use of some stainless toe kicks.
I think something light would look wonderful in there, maybe the underutilized Urliksdal.

Thanks for the great feedback....
The other option we thought of was using the ADEL WHITE for the wall and base cabinets along the wall and just use the NEXUS BB for the Island alone. We would then contrast the white cabinets with dark countertop and contrast the dark island with a white countertop.
I'm just not the biggest fan of white kitchens, my wife likes them though. I guess there has to be a balance.
Any comments using the ADEL White with the NEXUS BB for the Island??
Regards,
Joe.
p.s. A couple even mentioned the use of the stainless feet instead of solid toe kicks. Interesting....... We're looking at this option too now.

I like a bit of drama, and feel you can pull off the dark/dark providing you keep your wall colour light enough, and have enough lighting in the room for after dark. It also depends on how much natural light the room gets - if you get enough you can have a wonderful look!

Re: Nexus Brown Black Cabs and Dark Flooring - ok?
I think having a contrasting color for the island only can work nicely, but if mixing NBB and Adel I would keep the counters the same color (white/light) everywhere because you already would be contrasting not only door color, but style (contemporary slab versus an updated Skaker/country look) and I think you need something to pull the look together and make it appear harmonious.
For a good example of mixing styles in that way, check out the Siematic kitchen website (their Beaux Arts collection). They have kitchens that mix very trad door styles with sleek contemporary ones, but it works very well because they used similar materials and/or colors throughout.
Re: Nexus Brown Black Cabs and Dark Flooring - ok?
Here is a pic of a kitchen with doors in contrasting colors on the island and base cabs. In this pic, they did use th dark counters on the light cabs, and vice versa, and I think it works here. But note that throughout the style of the cabs is the same (traditional).

to be honest, i like that picture you found with the dark cabinets and dark floor. it has a sort of rich, cozy look to it. and looks very nice with a light counter.
it's a real shame there aren't really matching glass doors for the nexus bb, because that does seem to open the room up.
