We've FINALLY managed to get around to installing part of our backsplash. Our paint choice was dependent on seeing the tiles installed. I'm thrilled with the color. The pictures don't really do them justice, but I tried to get a picture to accurately represent the colors. This is as close as i could get. My question is whether to go light or dark with paint. My cabinets are Askerum, my floor is medium stained oak, the counters are dark charcoal color.

My inclination isto gowith a very pale blue, several shades lighter than the big swatch I currently have painted.I could also see going really dark (either a dark gray-blue or chocolate color), but worry how that would look with the countertop.
I'd vote for a pale blue or a pale clay-green (I think that's the first small swatch, but paler) color. Your horizontals are dark, the cabinets are light and the vertical walls should complement the cabinets. The backsplash pulls it all together and will become a feature of the room.
I don't know if it's the lighting, but I really like the blue (large swatch). It looks as if it matches the blue in the tiles quite closely. It's a cheery blue. That said, your kitchen looks very beautiful-the cabinet/countertop combination is very nice.
I think anything too pale would make your cabinets wash out. I really like the blue you have painted as the large swatch, and, depending on the layout of your kitchen, even think the darkest blue at the bottom of the wall would make a really nice accent if used with the lighter blue.
My own personal preference would be a tint of the color you have in the large swatch -- just a few notches lighter. Of course, I also have this wild bit of me that is screaming "Pick up that reddish brown color in the tiles!". But I don't think I'd do it. Personally. :?

I'd have to vote against the reddish brown (sorry Susan). I don't like kitchens to be too warm looking. When they are, I never feel that they're quite sanitary. I'd end up constantly cleaning in fear of missing something. Plus I think brown would darken your kitchen too much.
No skin off my nose Chabuchie. I wouldn't do it either. But it's there, so I mentioned it. Because today is all about saying exactly what we feel without any sort of filtering at all.
