I am so excited! I got nearly everything, and I did not make too many mistakes (though I've been trying to call back and fix them) with all the head spinning that happened near the end.

I am demolishing my kitchen this weekend and starting assembly. I managed to "plan" this over the only 3 consecutive weekends where I have my kids, and assembly is just me... so I need to be diligent.

Where to start? Any good pointers?

Thank you!

How durable are Adel birch doors?

Hi, we changed our kitchen about 4...

Hi, we changed our kitchen about 4 years ago and bought the Stat doors which we were really pleased with. However, we have found that the painted finish is not very durable - water splashes have caused the paint to crack and peel and we are now having to replace the doors.

We've decided for a change of colour scheme and have been looking at the Adel birch doors. If you have these doors how durable have you found them? Or have you found any of the other doors particularly durable? Any help greatly appreciated!

Thank you

I don't know if it's the late hour or if I've really struck upon something wonderful. Check this out:

Blue kitchen floor?!!

I think it is beautiful. Keep in mind the planned cabinets are Adel White. My concerns are about the versatility of this blue/grey colored floor and the coordinating palette. I don't know what color countertops to do (dark or light) and then paint colors are confusing too. I was looking at a buttery yellow
Blue kitchen floor?!!

Blue kitchen floor?!!

or a rich red
Blue kitchen floor?!!

I do love color so I'm not too scared to make my kitchen "festive" but I don't want to be stuck with something that looks off in years to come or that restricts my options when/if I'd like to switch up the palette. Another concern I have is that what I'm looking for is "light and bright". I don't want to bring in a lot of darkness to the room. I don't know though...the blue flooring is pretty awesome. I'd probably go with a stone colored, white, or wood countertop (I'm not interested in a "modern" motif however). What do y'all think about this flooring option and/or my paint color ideas? Is blue/grey a neutral that will go OK with most colors or will I regret my decision? Color lovers encouraged to submit your opinions! :D

Thanks in advance,

I live in the West Indies, so...

I live in the West Indies, so ordering an IKEA kitchen from Miami (Sunrise) is a logistical nightmare, but undaunted, I decided to get 3 kitchens: 2 for the apartments we are building here and one for my home. So, I planned out all three on line, and sent Husband up to Miami armed with shopping lists, plans etc. What with the 3 kitchens and a host of other stuff for the apartments, we filled a 20' container (IKEA heaven or what!) and had it shipped down. Sorting out which boxes went with which kitchen has proven a nightmare of huge proportions but I've just discovered why part of the puzzle wouldn't go together. The shallow base cabinet I had on the kitchen planner, which was identified as such on the plan, came up as a wall cabinet on the shopping list (which I foolishly never double checked). This would explain why i have a wall cabinet too many and why I can't find the base cabinet. It is not the end of the world (the missing 30" sink cabinet which never made it into the container is far more problematical!), but I just wanted to warn everyone to double check the shopping list that the kitchen planner generates.

oh, and if anyone has ever tried to use a wall cabinet as a base cabinet, let me know!

Which corner cabinet should I use?

I have placed an order for an IKEA...

I have placed an order for an IKEA kitchen (see attached 3D image of full kitchen). I posted about hood choices in another forum. A few people their expressed concern about the blind corner cabinet with pull-out not being able to support the weight of pans. They though I would be better of putting the corner cabinet with a lazy susan in the corner by the range.

By nature of its design the lazy susan corner cabinet will handle more weight. I am hoping someone here can tell me from direct experience how well the blind corner cabinet with pull-out can handle weight?

The current design has:
21" cabinet to left of sink with pull out wire baskets. Then blind corner cabinet with pull-out. Then range. Then 15" cabinet with drawers. Above the range to the left is a 12" cabinet.

The best design using the other corner cabinet has:
12" cabinet to left of sink with pull-outs. Then a lazy susan corner cabinet. Then another 12" cabinet with pull-outs. Then the range. Then a 18" cabinet with drawers. Above the range to the left is a 15" cabinet. This design will necessitate cutting the trim on the door into the kitchen to the left of the range down to almost nothing. See 2nd attached image.

I was wondering if anyone has bought just the cabinet frame only and then either made or purchased the doors/drawers/finish panels? I have woodworking skills but having the cab frame already done would save time. I want to use bamboo for the doors and drawers but might just use bamboo for everything. I don't like the color/grain of any door/drawer Ikea offers.
My kitchen is OLD but would like to create the "greenest" kitchen possible with environmentally friendly materials.

Nexus birch, Abstrak red with white or birch frames?

I'm a long time lurker, and am...

I'm a long time lurker, and am just now seriously planning our kitchen remodel. We have a small, old (1918) house, and I love mixing the old with a very contemporary kitchen. I'm originally from Germany, and I love those very hypermodern and functional but small kitchens.

We now have a small galley kitchen, and will be removing the wall between the dining room and kitchen to integrate the spaces. We currently have the round birch Bjursta table, birch Gilbert chairs, and birch Norden cabinet in the dining room.

For our kitchen, I'm leaning towards the Nexus birch doors, and a mix of Avsikt and Nexus birch wall cabs (I'd love the horizontal cabs but am unsure how I could make them fit), with white toekicks, plain white corian countertops and light sage green backpainted glass backsplash. We will be throwing in one of those Big Chill retro fridges in red. The walls will be pumpkin (we currently have Benjamin Moore's pumpkin cream and oxford gold with white trim throughout the house). The counterside against the current dining room wall will be replaced with a small (48") island with seating for two on the dining side, and we will also have two 80" tall cabs perpendicular to the island, facing into the dining and kitchen with Abstrakt red doors.

The problem is, I don't know whether to go with the white or birch frames. I think for the birch doors, the white frames are more contemporary, but for the tall cabs with the red doors, I'm partial to the birch frame, especially because it's facing the dining room as well, and I think the birch will somehow integrate into the dining room better. But I will also stick with the white toekicks, so won't that look odd?

Also, I'm not sure I'd like for the island to be white from the dining side - or does one put a cover panel in birch on that? Also, the cabinet at the end, over the fridge (will be exposed) - do I put a birch cover panel on that?

We are also planning on the Lansa handles, but installing them horizontally throughout - what size do most people get for that nice modern look, that also works on all the cabs?

Sorry for all the questions - I'd really appreciate some advice!! Thanks in advance...(p.s. I will attach a pic later today or tomorrow, so you can have an idea of the plan).

While I'm at it, which looks more modern: cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling, or not quite? We have 8 foot ceilings, so the 39" cabs would leave us with about 21 inches of space above the countertop, which is fine. But I'm not sure I like the look of the long, vertical cabs.

While I initially like the white...

While I initially like the white Nutid more, I've seen stainless Nutids in the store and the mirror effect was quite nice and hid that black frame around the see through part of the door that is much more marked in the white Nutids.

The Ikea stores have plenty of lighting so the reflection in the door is very strong. What does it look like in real life?
I'm going to have 2 ovens that can be seen from the living room in a wall of Abstrakt white cabinets and wonder what will be the best there and if the stainless mirror would indeed be mirror or show the black too.

White or stainless Nutid appliances in Abstrakt white kitchen?

The fridge will be stainless (can't afford the very few integrated in the USA) and my range across that wall is a stainless Bluestar but it's really hidden from view. On the other side of the fridge, the dishwasher will be fully integrated and I have two built in Nutid appliances, MW and oven. I initially picked the white to match and have mostly white but went back to the store and the stainless / mirror of the other Nutid did look quite nice, versus the bit of very visible black in the white appliances.

Do the glass and Abstrakt white match well, or would you go for stainless if they don't? Does anybody have an Abstrakt white kitchen withe either?

Thanks!

OK, I am turning to the experts. I...

OK, I am turning to the experts. I look at the IKEA Planner for hours a day sometimes and all it does is make me cry. LOL. Seriously.

The kitchen is a decent enough size, it just seems to keep getting the better of me.

The bottom leads to the dining room and the rest of the house. That wall can be torn down, the doorway can be moved, whatever, but the brick chimney in the middle has to stay. The left side doorway goes to my son's bedroom and can't be moved. The top is the door going to the backyard and garage, so it gets a lot of use.

The rectangle in the middle is where I have a current island, it's an old dresser. It doesn't need to stay, hence the floating box.

Our house is a 1937 bungalow, so I like the ADEL white cabinets for that cottage look. I want something classic, not too modern.

Move whatever you want, my husband is an electrician and has experience with plumbing as well.

I need an island. This is where my kids have breakfast while I make their lunches and it's literally my favorite time of day. I don't want a cooktop in the island if I can possibly help it, but I'd be open to a sink if need be. I'd really prefer nothing in the island though. Just draaaaaawers...... oh, the luxury of more than one drawer! The kids need about 36 inches to sit. I had never thought about sticking them at one end of the island, but I just saw that setup at the IKEA in Charlotte and thought it was a neat alternative to having them down a long side.

Of course I'd love to have a beautiful hood over my stove, but I'm not sure where to go with the microwave if we do that. If you have any ideas for that, shoot!! I'd like a separate oven and cooktop- it can be range-style, even, I just like the high-end look of the uninterrupted countertop.

I'd like the cabinets for plates and bowls and glasses to be glass-front. Possibly open shelving, I'm just worried about having them stay clean.

We also need space near the back door for shoes, bags, coats, etc.

:yikes: think you can do that in my space?? LOL.

Edit- I have the .fpf file but can't seem to get it to attach.

Edit again- I'm slow, I just didn't open the window wide enough to see the upload button. LOL.

Has it been done? Chopping a corner cabinet

Hi Ikeafans...

I have a lovely...

Hi Ikeafans...

I have a lovely old kitchen that I'm remodeling and it presents a few obstacles (or maybe the obstacles are really my own inflexibility. I'm not willing to concede that yet, so for now, just pretend it's the space, not me. LOL.) The corner of the kitchen where I plan to put glasses, plates, and bowls is 51" wide from the corner to a brick chimney and 27" wide from the corner to the edge of a window. I wish they had 24" wide glass front cabinets, but no amount of wishing so far has made that happen for me. Instead I'd put in a 30 inch wide box and then I have a 21 inches of odd space from there to the corner. I'd love to put in a corner cabinet, but it's 25 inches wide. I'd love to chop one side down to make it fit- it would only be 9 or so inches deep on one side, but I'm not matching it up to any other wall cabinets, so it wouldn't be a big deal. I'm just not sure if the construction of the cabinet box would allow for such an alteration.

If this makes no sense, I'd be glad to post a picture. I'd just like to know if it's been done before successfully.

Also, I tried the search feature and haven't turned anything up, so if this topic has been covered, mods feel free to throw me a link and remove this post. Thanks!
