We are planning a 115"x38" island. we are on a concrete slab foundation and are installing new laminate flooring. How can we get outlets on the island? I guess we have to make some kind of trench in the concrete? How hard is that to do?
- Concrete saw. Think of it as a circular saw that's the size of a floor sander. Cuts are clean, but dry cutting means a lot of dust; wet cutting means a lot of mud.
- Jackhammer. Just as noisy and dusty, and with much much less precision ... but it does work faster.
- Hammer and chisel. Least amount of dust, but by far the most time consuming!
The bigger question is whether you have the circuit capacity for the added outlets. You may want to consult an electrician on this one.

You'll have to check to make sure you can run conduit in a trench first. Some building depts don't like that. The actual work isn't much, but will definitely require an electrician.
Another way is to mount one or two floor to ceiling posts and work those posts into your design. Posts can hold shelves and they can look very clean and modern if done right. Then you can run armored conduit up one of the posts and across your ceiling behind the drywall (or whatever) to find a junction box somewhere to tap power off. You can design it, then get a licensed electrician to do it.

This is NOT a job for the everyday DIY'er. Get yourselves a qualified electrician.

Just taking my inner IKEA geek out for a walk.
Thanks for the replies. We were never going to do it ourselves. I just wanted to know how it was done so I could decide if it was worth it. As it turns out our plumbing is in the concrete and we have decided it is too risky to mess with that. Our house was not built all that well, so who knows which way they ran the plumbing pipes. In our area it is not code to have outlets on the island so we are ok there. We have alot of counter space along the wall and have lots of outlets there. Hopefully we won't miss them too much on the island.
