Feet to elevate a bookcase and keep it dry?
Any ideas? I have an Expedit bookcase in my family room that's on carpet that sits on top of a concrete foundation (which, BTW, was a dumb idea to build in Connecticut!!! Where the ground freezes and thaws - but I digress). Anyway, the ground periodically gets wet and so the bottom of the book case gets wet.
Now, yes I know I need to deal with the moisture issue and I will but any good ideas for what I could sit the Expedit bookcase on to keep it dry but also stable?

I have my two Expedit on Capita legs. I think I used six under them the long way. Four would work if you have the narrow one standing vertically. I'd just use that little strappy thing that comes with them, (or a homemade alternative) to attach the top to the wall to make sure it can't tip.

Wait a minute! What room is this? Screw my bookcase issue - is this a craft room? Love the wall color.
Seriously - thanks. That's a great idea.

Ralph Lauren "Racer Pink" (ironic name considering I spend rather a lot of time playing with motorcycles at racetracks, don't you think?). It's my studio/craftroom, yes. The picture was right after I put them in...it's even better now because they're packed with more crafty deliciousness

Re: Feet to elevate a bookcase and keep it dry?
What a fab bookcase, splatgirl!
Jenn, I've used those little rubber feet that you can get where you get the furniture parts at the hardware store...they screw into the bottom and elevate the whole thing about half an inch. It's worked to keep the knockdown cabinet in my kids bathroom from getting damaged, so it might be enough for your bookcase. It's just enough space to allow air to circulate so if you don't have actual rising waters it should be fine.

OMG
I think that's Elizabeth's (5 year old pink fanatic) ideal room. You don't do sewing and decorating camp for preschooler's do you?

That would be such a riot!
I did this amazing kids room once in a similar hot pink and light pink combo of giant-sized zebra stripe. It turned out so cool and the kid was just completely off her rocker in love with it.
I heart kids rooms, especially when the parents are fun and color-fearless!

Re: Feet to elevate a bookcase and keep it dry?
Oy - this is one of those mods that works in the given situation, but could easily be misapplied and scares me no end!!!!!
Expidit bookcases are designed and engineered to sit on the floor, not on the small mounting plates of the Capita legs. It looks like SG installed her legs in the proper places so as to align with the minimal "solid" framing that there is in the bottom of the units, and also used enough of the legs to properly distribute the weight of the units combined with the contents they are carrying.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful if you try this at home yourselves. DO NOT place the legs more than 1/2" away from the front and back edges of the units - if you move to far away from the "solid" frame on the perimeter of the base, you have little more than 1/8" masonite carrying the combined load of the bookcases and its contents. And if you are using this unit as a true bookcase, you need to use more than the 6 legs that SG used.
Jenn - how about a couple of 1x2 or 1x3 strips, running lengthwise under the unit? Is that thick enough to get it off the carpet and allow air to circulate?

Re: Feet to elevate a bookcase and keep it dry?
No worries Chuck - we went with a couple of strips of wood - my Expedit may be hosed though - it was WET under there. Grrrrrrr....I hate my family room and I hate that I don't know where/how/who to fix it.

Re: Feet to elevate a bookcase and keep it dry?
You could start by beating your home inspector about the head and shoulders. Or did the HGTV people rush you through too much to get an inspection? Would insurance fix a leaky basement?
Splat - scrap the cocktails and sewing with Kelly and our daughter, I think we're just going to ship her out to live with you, kay???
