hi there!
well i am halfway through my stat kitchen remodel, DIY and BMS (by myself

) ...my previous stove was electric and one of those huge avocado green 42" behemoths with a matching fan. i removed the stove and had my gas line moved to install a new, smaller maytag gas stove (which so far i love), and just using the old fan hood in the interim. because i am working by myself i opted to do the base cabinets first and get a functional sink asap .. so now i am working on the uppers. well, last night i took down the old over-the-old-stove cabinet and hood expecting to find venting ducts behind there. Guess what? Solid drywall. not a vent to the outside in sight??

i have been using my gas stove without any ventilation at all, and i have a parrot

anyway. the old vent was completely closed off and this is not a recirculating hood.
so i have two pipes coming out of my roof. one over my bathroom vent, and one coming out about 1.5 feet to the left of my kitchen window (about 20" from my new stove position). when i had my central heat and air switched from gas to a heat pump last year, they removed the old gas outlet to the roof. so...........is this second vent out through the roof for my range hood and i just need to go digging in the wall for it??? what would be the purpose of a vent through the roof of a kitchen if not for a hood?
just in case anyone needs to know - i have a crawlspace, not a basement. and i just went up into my attic to feel around for that pipe, but i have blow in insulation and can't see anything
thanks for any help/advice....trying to diy and be safe (if possible)
