Any Painters Here? One Coat of Primer or Two?

I've looked all over the net and am still confused...(everything I read says a second coat "wouldn't hurt"...is that the same as not necessary?)

Do I need a second coat of primer so the walls and ceiling are completely nice and even looking, or does it not matter? I plan on doing two coats of Valspar ultra premium (white flat ceiling paint and green satin on the walls).

I used a Behr primer/sealer on my new drywall. The walls, with one coat, look almost like I did a final coat w/ flat paint, with some splotchiness. The ceiling much more uneven and splotchy.

I don't believe the unevenness has anything to do with the drywall soaking up the paint, but more that I'm horrible at painting with the roller attached to the pole, hence the reason the walls look a whole ton better than the ceiling.

Any suggestions?
TIA

Behr probably has instructions on the can. They seem to figure on one coat, but since I've never done new drywall.....

Zinsser has an in-depth website. Primer Sealers from Zinsser - drywall primer, exterior paint primer

And by the way, I didn't enjoy priming my own house's ceilings!

Re: Any Painters Here? One Coat of Primer or Two?

well my regular paint says one coat coverage...but i'll prob do two b/c i'm old school and stuck in my ways and that's what i've always done. the primer, surprising, says pretty much nothing. it says you can topcoat it in a hour, but i'm guessing they're talking about the regular paint.

i think i'm going to leave the one coat of primer, spotchy or not, and hope for the best. i'm so tired and i just want to get this painting done already!

thanks for the link to the zinsser site...it said basically what I've read elsewhere, but no one talks about how even the coverage of primer is suppose to be. I'm prob just worrying over nothing lol

I've rarely bothered to get really even primer coverage. Among other things, I think primers usually don't have as much pigment as paint. I have added pigment to primer so its color is closer to that of the paint layer.

I always use one coat of primer and two finish coats. I don't tint the primer because I buy it in 5-gallon buckets. IMO, Zinseer primers can't be beat for performance and price. I especially like the Bullseye 1-2-3.
