With the baby due in less than eight weeks , we're having to hire out some stuff we'd normally due ourselves. I'm considering hiring painters, but I don't want to waste their time and mine on getting quotes if it will just be way out of our budget. Does anyone have any idea of roughly how much interior painters charge? Also, will painters do drywall prep work, like repairing nail pops, or do the walls need to be paint-ready?
cost varies incredibly region to region (even town to town) so truly, your best bet is to get a couple quotes. it's not wasting time, if the price sounds right you'll hire them so that's enough
as far as the prep, it just depends on the painter. but i haven't met many who expect it "paint read"

Paint-ready vs. having them do the repairs ... that will basically depend what you want them to do. If they do the repairs, they should be taking liablity of any issues that might crop up in the warranty period.
Definitely be wary of those that are significantly cheaper than the others ... painting isn't rocket science, but you do want someone who knows what their doing (experience), doesn't make a mess (masks what needs to be masked, covers floors, draft curtains, etc.), lays down primer before painting, and uses quality paint.

Here's a good example of how much estimates can vary...
Two years ago I hired painters to paint two rooms, a small foyer, a hallway, a bath and three exterior doors. There were LOTS of doors and trim involved. I got three quotes - $1200, $2800 and $6000.
The 6K guy does really beautiful work, but the $2800 guy does a terrific job for half the cost. The $1200 guy just sounded too good to be true, although I had seen his work and found it to be pretty good. I went with Mr. 2800 and was very pleased.
Thank you, everyone. Does anyone have suggestions of what kinds of questions I should ask potential painters, other than price? And am I correct in assuming they will need to see the actual room, rather than giving a quote based on dimensions?
