We're going to have to get our whole kitchen under this new system...I asked in a new thread about whether or not it would be better to get things delivered to me via IKEA direct or to brave it and go with a rented truck to Seattle. We'll be coming from Portland so it won't be exactly easy to just come back for more stuff (although I know we probably will have to). What do people think who have actually used the new set-up? Risk it or do delivery?
Just a quick report on how this system seems to be working. At Ikea today, a couple in the next checkout line had 6 carts full of $2800 worth of kitchen. The guy said it took about an hour for them to pull their order. It took only about 15 minutes for them to check out. To me, that's surprisingly quick.
FYI for you Seattle shoppers, the As Is room had tons of the giant cover panels in today, mostly Applad blue, Abstrakt Whiteand Askerum.
I finally got down to IKEA to use the new system. You still have to go to the kitchen area to have an employee translate "I want a 21" wall cabinet" into the breakdown of neccesary parts. However, instead of getting a list and going directly to the checkout, you get the list and get to find each item based on a description like "Row 35, Bin 17".
While you are loading a flat cart, someone will pull your doors for you.
My biggest concern is that it is not something that I could do by myself very well. I wasn't buying a kitchen's worth of cabinets, but instead picking up what was not available during the big sale, but it barely fit on one cart, and that one cart was really hard to maneuver through the aisleway to the parking lot.
If I'd had more to buy, I'd have had to make up a cart and go through the checkout and load TWICE! Or get a friend to push a second cart. I
I did like that I could go get one item without getting a order and having to go to the warehouse.
I'm only guessing, but my prediction is that they will not order your kitchen directly, but will be very helpful about going over the order with you and spotting potential problems - assuming you catch them at a time when they don't have 10 people waiting for their help in placing cash and carry orders. Then you can be more sure of what you need to order with Ikea Direct.
The store personnel normally help you figure out the order that you submit and pick up on the spot (i.e. cash and carry). I sent my order by fax, and kitchen people called me to discuss questions I had, then they entered the detailed order for me. I did pick it up at the store, though, which you won't be doing.
I am hoping that I can catch someone who is not busy, but I don't know how successful I will be considering I am heading there over Thanksgiving weekend!
Ach. Maybe they will be on Thanksgiving ThursDay and I can sneal in and get someone's attention then.
BTW, anyone know if Seattle IKEA has good after Turkey day sales?
