I installed the magnesium track lights in my home office and living room almost 2 years ago. The original installation in the living room has been working great. Both installations are on dimmers and they're awesome. But the one in the office burnt out the transformer a month ago. I finally got around to buying a replacement at IKEA and just installed it. I noticed immediately that the new magnesium unit has a much more compact and newly designed transformer.
It's now installed and working like new, but I'm hearing a slight buzzing noise. Is this something I should be concerned about? I mean, I am concerned because the last unit's wires inside were burned to a black crisp and it was no wonder that there wasn't a fire! I'm in an old building built in the 30s and the wiring in this place sucks, but it should still work right? Any tips on what I should do? I'm definitely not leaving the lights on when I leave!
I have had the Magnesium in my kitchen for about 5 yrs, tonight the lights slowly dimmed and just went off. I assume the transformer is fried, they won't come back on. I ran across this post while looking for answers, and was curious if cranleyc ever found a replacement to allow for more lights. Our family has grown and the bigger table could use more lights! If not, will the new transformer work with my 5 yr old track and lights? Hate to take the whole thing down...
I went to ikea recently and they sell the base model part separate from the track. So I was able to just replace that and keep the same track. I doubt you would need to replace the track, but maybe the bulbs. Based on your description though, my guess is that the bulbs are still fine and it's just the base.
I found a new transformer that fits inside the casing and is 150 watt so I can have 7 lights! And it says it's dimmable!
I ordered it from usalight.com Item SL-728-150w. Cost was just under $10 each, I got two with shipping for under $30. The screw holes didn't line up exactly with the old one but it was pretty easy to swap them out. Keep in mind I have the older version of the Magnesium so am not sure it will fit in the new one if it is much smaller. This transformer measures: Length 3-5/8", Height 1-1/8", Width 1-5/16". Hope this helps somebody else.
THANK YOU momof6 for your helpful information! We have 10 of these light sets - and one at a time, each of the transformers have been going out! I ordered the exact one she recommended (yep, 10 of them!) and they work great!
We do have some of the newer models as well as older ones and yes, the holes don't quite line up, so what we did was use "zip ties" to attach them...works like a charm!
