If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

So, we putting an easyloc floor (basically marmoleum click sold for slightly cheaper at home depot in canada - it installs like laminate) in our kitchen. I'm not sure yet if we want to put it under the cabinets or not (I know forbo says its ok, the home depot guy said that it could cause issues, and I'm also worried the cabinet installers will destroy it).

If I don't put it under the cabinets (we're talking six feet max of base cabinetry), how should we do it...run it up to the legs and put the toe-kick on after? run it up to the toe kick, caulk it, and put quarter-round on? I know we should lift up the dishwasher to the same height as the floor so it's not caught behind the lip, but I'm confused as to what to do when we meet the cabinets...

Help please!

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

My cabinets do not have my flooring installed under them - the floor was the very last thing that was done in my remodel. (my floor is bamboo) - they used some scraps of bamboo to raise the dishwasher up .. and ran the flooring a bit under the cabinets - I don't think they went all the way to the legs though - and didn't do anything special - e.g. no caulk, no quarter round. I don't know if there are any special considerations with marmoleum - you might want to ask the guys in the flooring dept where you bought it ... or do some research specifically on marmoleum on the internet. I don't think we've had a lot of people using marmoleum here ...

It goes without saying that we want to see photos....

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

Well, I can tell you what I did.

We cut plywood the same height as our flooring to the size of the cabinets so that the cabinets sat on the plywood. The plywood came just under the legs. Then, we installed the flooring right up to the plywood. This way, everything was the same height. It worked for us, and allowed us to do our floor last, which was important for us because we're not so good at working in a space and protecting a floor at the same time

We did our floor all the way under the cabinets. But if you aren't going to, I would suggest putting plywood under the cabinets to the same height (or as close as possible) as the floor is going to be and lay the floor up to the plywood. You could also do it the opposite way and lay the floor and then fit in the ply in the space. That way you know your appliances will be able to slide out, and when it the floor expands and contracts the floor won't expand into nothing and leave gaps in the floor.

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

If you are not running the flooring under the cabinets, you can run it up to withing about 1/4" to 1/2" of the legs - the toekick will then cover the edge of the flooring for a finished look (it looks better than quarter round molding IMO and quarter round would defeat one of the benefits of the Ikea toeckick - easy removal in case you need to get under the cabinets.

As for appliances - any place where you will have slide-in appliances should be fully covered with the same flooring in my opinion (Dishwasher, refrigerator and range are the three most common areas).

With the Ikea adjustable legs, you don't have to have plywood under the other cabinets - just adjust the legs on the other cabinets to be up the additional amount.

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

We did a wood laminate floor and ran it under the cabinets (it's an office/kitchenette). But we didn't "finish" it under the cabs. It's all the extra cut off pieces and is often 1-2" short of reaching the wall. Not all of them have the tongue and grove correctly placed, but are more laid in place. There was a box of cut ends hanging around anyway, why not use them?

I like running the floor under the cabs incase I change my mind and do something different. I also paint the walls behind the cabs and finish the drywall behind the washer/dryer. Part of my "Belt & Suspenders" philosophy.

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

I did not run my laminate under my cabinets. I did run it under the dw , fridge and range. Had I not done this it would have difficult to remove them. The rest of the laminate stops 1/4" before the legs. Prior to cutting the first row of laminate this length I checked to see that the toe kick would cover the gap which is did. I haven't finished my kitchen yet so I haven't installed the toe kicks. I'm sure when I get around to installing them my two cats will be very depressed losing their favorite spot to hide from the dog (although today we added another dog to our menagerie - perhaps I should let them have their hiding spot a little bit longer ).

This is almost ESSENTIAL!! I once was hired to do an entire kitchen project because the dishwasher had been "locked in" by the tile installation.

And for the record, you don't have to worry about your floating floor floating away if it doesn't get installed under the cabinets. j/s

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

Ok, I think what I'm going to do is put plywood (the same thickness as the marmoleum) under my dishwasher, and install the other cabinets as is. The marmoleum is 1cm thick - there should be enough room under the countertop for the dishwasher plus the plywood, right? Or I could put it under all the cabinets, but I'm not doing the install so I don't know the exact dimension to use. And I don't trust the installer not to charge me $$ to do this extra thing for me, you know?

Re: If I DON'T put the floating floor under the cabinets.

IMO you're only talking 4 sq ft under the dw so why not just run the marmoleum underneath? But plywood would suffice.

You didn't mention the range or fridge, I'm assuming that you're planning on running the marmoleum underneath these two.
