Our kitchen is about 10'x13'... Electrician suggested either 5-6" lights or 8-4" lights... How do you figure out how many you need, where to put them, and what size?

We'll also have undercabinet lights...

Stacy,

Here's our process for determining light # and placement:

1. Check out every book the library has on lighting design, as well as every book on home improvement, renovation, kitchen design, etc. Read said books, many of which contain conflicting information.

2. Argue with spouse over light placement.

3. Read everything on the internet about lighting.

4. Argue more loudly with spouse over lights.

5. Ask everyone we know their opinion.

6. See # 2, 4.

7. Painstakingly draw a to-scale diagram of the room, cut out pieces of paper to represent can size, light dispersal, etc.

8. See # 2, 4, 6, with additional profanity.

9. Look at actual ceiling, realize with all the pipes, joists, ducts, etc., there are only a few limited options for can placement. Put the d*mn lights there.

10. Vow that you will never, ever do this again, nor will you ever move. Ever!

Different lights (and bulbs) have different "spreads". What you want to do with recessed cans is plot them so they slightly overlap to give even lighting. The spread depends on the size of the bulb and the height of the ceiling. There are charts at lighting sites that you can reference. You may also want lighting over specific areas which would be in addition to the general lighting.

Lay out a grid with your floor plan, and figure out the type of bulb you will be using (generally a PAR 30) and draw circles over your floor plan to see where the light will fall. Then add in your task and accent lighting.

Also some recessed lighting allow the bulb to be raised or lowered within the can which can affect where they illuminate, so if you placed them too far apart, you may be able to get a little bit more wall splash by lowering the bulb a little. *been recording too many devine design episodes*
