Hi all, great forum!

So...we just purchased 5 Grundtal puck lights (IKEA | Lighting | Furniture lighting | GRUNDTAL) that I want to install under out cabinets. Right now we have wires sticking out of our wall that are hooked up to a light switch(we removed the all track light that was hooked up there). I'd like to connect our puck lights to these wires. Does anyone have any advise on this. Do it, don't do it? What my options may be? Like using a transformer?

The Grundtal lights are low voltage with a seperate plug-in transformer - they are not (like most IKEA lights) designed for hard-wiring.

I would recommend buying the proper lights elsewhere for hard-wiring.

Another idea is to put an outlet on the wall using those wires. It will be a "switched outlet", but you'd be able to use your lights.

My hubby, who is good at electrical, says you need to install a junction box (octagon) and run the 120 wire into the junction box. Cut the plug off the wire coming out of the transformer. Then make the connection in the junction box and mount the transformer on top of the transformer.

He claims it is like hooking up a doorbell to the house wire system (as if that helps!)

Well thanks for the advice!! It would actually be pretty easy to install an outlet to those wires. Hiding it on the other hand may prove otherwise. I suppose that would be the same situation with trying to hide a transformer. I'll probably take torrus's advice and find new ones.

But if anyone has any other experiences, I'd gladly hear them.

What we did was to take the equivalent of your wires and move the corresponding outlet to a more discrete location inside one of the cabinets.

We added 4 outlets above the kitchen cabinets, and ran the wires behind the cabinets to plug them in.
