Has anyone ever spray painted any of the lack pieces. I have a plain white lack coffee table, and want to dress it up. Is it better to sand and then just use regular paint, or do you think spray paint would work? Anyone have any ideas or experiences they want to share?
Thanks!
The recent advice around here on color-changing these somewhat delicate finishes is gel stain which apparently sits on top of the grain. For painting, I might very gently sand that table and paint on with a brush on a less-noticable area of the table (in case you don't like it but still want to use it).
Thanks so much for the quick feedback. I did a couple of quick searches on gel stain, but had some more questions. Can you paint over it? I want to make the table a bright green. Also, do you need to sand when you're using gel stain, or can you apply directly to the table. Can you paint over gel stain?
I did so more reading, and in so, it sounds like the gel stain is for wood grain products. The Lack tables are particle board with a shiny veener. Would gel stain still work or is there a better way to paint them?
Thanks!
Hi- veneer is wood, just a very thin layer of it, so you don't want to sand it too much! The shiny part is a finish, most likely a polyurethane- that's what you're sanding through. Painting is easier as you have more control of the surface- the stain will take to the wood differently in different areas (possibly) based on how each part was sanded. It's really like a sheer vs opaque coating.
I would not personally use the stain as I'd be worried that it would be too hard to control and require lots of experimenting and while I'm sure it can be achieved, I just don't have the patience for that much futzing.
Now, my husband could probably do it- maybe you're like him and just get focused on something and keep going until it's right.
I think the LACK series is a melamine foil or a lacquer finish? If so, you'll need a spray paint specifically designed to stick to that specific finish. Make sure you do your prep exactly as it says - proper preparation is key to a good finish!
Good luck, and welcome to IKEAFANS!
Susan
